A method for producing a tetrafluoroolefin, such as 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-123434), comprises dehydrofluorinating a pentafluoroalkane in a gas phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising chromium oxyfluoride. In a preferred embodiment, 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf) is produced by forming a catalyst comprising chromium oxyfluoride by calcining CrF3?xH2O, where x is 1-10, in the presence of a flowing gas comprising nitrogen to form a calcined chromium oxyfluoride, and dehydrofluorinating 1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245cb) in a gas phase in the presence of the catalyst to form the 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene (HFO-1234yf).

Heavy crude oil residue and vacuum residue is upgraded using an ionic liquid catalyst formulated with metals of Group VIB and VIIIB of the periodic table, which catalyst is highly miscible in the hydrocarbon phase. The combination of different metals and acidity from the protons that make up the ionic liquid breaks the links C—S, C—N and C—O of the resins and asphaltenes and increases API gravity, decreases viscosity, removes sulfur and nitrogen compounds, and results in conversion of 50 to 70% of the waste oil and heavy crude oil into lighter distillates.

Titanium oxide-based photocatalysts which contain a metal halide in titanium oxide and which are prepared from titanium oxide and/or its precursor, which may optionally be heat treated, by contact with a reactive gas containing a metal halide of the formula MXn or MOXn (wherein M=a metal, X=a halogen, and n=an integer) with heating stably develop a high photocatalytic activity with visible light irradiation. The photocatalysts may subsequently be stabilized by contact with water or by heat treatment, and/or promoted by contact with a heteropoly acid and/or an isopoly acid so as to include a metal complex in the titanium oxide. Photocatalysts prepared in this manner exhibit novel ESR features. The present invention also provides methods for preparing these photocatalysts, a photocatalyst dispersion and a photocatalytic coating fluid containing such a photocatalyst, and photocatalytic functional products and methods for their manufacture using the photocatalyst.

A process for the activation of a fluorination catalyst in which a catalyst precursor compound, supported or unsupported is first dried and thereafter activated by exposure to an activating agent at a pressure greater that about 100 psig and a temperature grater than about 100° C. The process is particularly suited to the activation of chromium (III) compounds, such as Cr2O3. The resulted dry, high-pressure activated catalyst was found to provide increase fluorination conversion, with higher selectivity of the desired product.

Particular embodiments of the present invention provide separation techniques for the separation of chlorofluorocarbons from HF, from other chlorofluorocarbons, and the separation of isomers of halogenated compounds. Still other embodiments of the present invention provide catalytic synthetic techniques that demonstrate extended catalyst lifetime. In other embodiments, the present invention provides catalytic techniques for the purification of isomeric mixtures.
