摘要:
Surgical implants for replacing cartilage are provided with hydrogel polymers affixed to anchors made of “shape-memory” materials, such as nitinol alloys. These implants can be flexed, allowing them to be inserted into joints arthroscopically. After insertion, an implant will return to its manufactured size and shape, and can be anchored to bone or other tissue. The anchoring components can grip and hold hydrogels or other soft polymers by means of an interface of porous fabric. The fabric can support a reinforcing mesh embedded within the soft polymer, and its bottom surface can promote tissue ingrowth, leading to stronger anchoring. Two or more porous layers can enclose a soft polymer, for purposes such as sustained drug release or holding transplanted cells.

The present invention relates to a method and a device for alleviating and/or preventing conditions relating to damaged joints involving articulating surfaces. In a first aspect the present invention relates to a prosthetic device for insertion into a joint cavity of a joint of a vertebrate, such as a human, said device consisting of a biocompatible material comprising at least a first polymeric component and a second polymeric component, wherein the chain length of the first polymeric component is longer than the chain length of the second polymeric component, the polymeric components in particular being polyethylene, polypropylene and/or polyvinylpyrrolidone. The device may be used for establishing sidability and/or distributing pressure in a joint of a vertebrate such as a human, by inserting into the joint cavity of the joint a prosthetic device, preferably a prosthetic device as defined in this invention, capable of locking itself to an intra-articular component and thereby being fixed or retained in the joint cavity in a manner which is substantially non-invasive with respect to cartilage and bone natively present in the joint cavity. The device may be formed by moulding, whereby it is possible to adapt the form of the device to the joint needing alleviation. Also the device may be formed with a hole or a slit to fit into the joint and lock the device around intra-articular components. A further aspect of invention relates to a method for introducing the prosthetic device into a joint, such as a method comprising locking the device to an intro-articular component, thereby fixing or retaining the device in the joint cavity in a manner which is substantially non-invasive with respect to cartilage and bone natively present in the joint cavity. Also the invention relates to an instrument for inserting a prosthetic device according to the invention, comprising means for deforming the prosthetic device into a reduced volume or a slender shape and means for grasping the intra-articular component to which the device is capable of interlocking.

A balloon for use in compressing cancellous bone and marrow (also known as medullary bone or trabecular bone). The balloon comprises an inflatable balloon body for insertion into said bone. The body has a shape and size to compress at least a portion of the cancellous bone to form a cavity in the cancellous bone and/or to restore the original position of the outer cortical bone, if fractured or collapsed. The balloon desirably incorporates restraints which inhibit the balloon from applying excessive pressure to various regions of the cortical bone. The wall or walls of the balloon are such that proper inflation of the balloon body is achieved to provide for optimum compression of the bone marrow. The balloon can be inserted quickly into a bone. The balloon can be made to have a suction catheter. The balloon can be used to form and/or enlarge a cavity or passage in a bone, especially in, but not limited to, vertebral bodies. Various additional embodiments facilitate directionally biasing the inflation of the balloon.

A cup assembly of an orthopaedic joint prosthesis comprises a cup-shaped component which is rotationally symmetrical about a polar axis, and which is hollow to receive a rotationally symmetrical head of an component of the joint prosthesis. The cup-shaped component has a groove in its outer surface which extends around the component in a plane which is approximately perpendicular to the polar axis. A spacer component comprises a plurality of spaced apart spacer elements which are connected by a spacer web. The spacer web, but not the spacer elements, can be fitted into the groove in the outer surface of the cup-shaped component.

Systems for treating a bone, e.g. a vertebral body, having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone provide a first tool, a second tool, and a third tool. The first tool establishes a percutaneous access path to bone. The second tool is sized and configured to be introduced through the percutaneous access path to form a void that occupies less than the interior volume. The third tool places within the void through the percutaneous access path a volume of filling material. Related methods for treating a bone, e.g. a vertebral body, having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone provide establishing a percutaneous access path to bone. A tool is introduced through the percutaneous access path and manipulated to form a void that occupies less than the interior volume. A volume of filling material is then placed within the void through the percutaneous access path.

Various systems, and methods are provided for transporting a therapeutic agent to the interior of a skeletal support structure. In one implementation, a first expandable structure has a second expandable structure disposed within the first expandable structure. Furthermore, the first and second expandable structures are configured to expand a void in a skeletal support structure and to receive a radiation source between the first and second expandable structures.

An encapsulation device for repair of articular cartilage defects includes a body for disposition adjacent a bone in an area of the cartilage defect, and elongated leg structure extending from the body and for disposition in the bone in the area of the cartilage defect. The leg structure is provided with a length which is a plurality of magnitudes greater than a thickness of the body, and is of a generally conical configuration.

A balloon for use in compressing cancellous bone and marrow (also known as medullary bone or trabecular bone) against the inner cortex of bones whether the bones are fractured or not. The balloon comprises an inflatable, non-expandable balloon body for insertion into said bone. The body has a shape and size to compress at least a portion of the cancellous bone to form a cavity in the cancellous bone and to restore the original position of the outer cortical bone, if fractured or collapsed. The balloon is prevented from applying excessive pressure to the outer cortical bone. The wall or walls of the balloon are such that proper inflation the balloon body is achieved to provide for optimum compression of all the bone marrow. The balloon is able to be folded so that it can be inserted quickly into a bone. The balloon can be made to have a suction catheter. The main purpose of the balloon is the forming or enlarging of a cavity or passage in a bone, especially in, but not limited to, vertebral bodies.
