The print heads are preferably formed utilising standard vlsi/ulsi processing. Integrated drive electronics are preferably formed on the same substrate. The integrated drive electronics can comprise a CMOS process. Ink can be ejected from the substrate substantially normal to the substrate.

An inkjet drop ejection apparatus having a chamber with a nozzle; and, an actuator for ejecting drops of ink through the nozzle; wherein, the area defined by the nozzle is less than half a cross sectional area of the chamber. A chamber with a relatively large internal cross section will accommodate a large actuating surface. As the nozzle area is relatively small, the actuator need only move a small amount to force a drop out of the nozzle with sufficient kinetic energy. Smaller movements of the actuator are more energy efficient. Some designs can use the relatively large volume of ink in the chamber to cool the actuator and eventually remove the heat via the ejected drops.

A micro-electromechanical fluid ejection device includes a substrate that defines a fluid inlet channel and incorporates a wafer and drive circuitry positioned on the wafer. Nozzle chamber walls extend from the substrate and bound the fluid inlet channel to define a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with the fluid inlet channel and a fluid ejection port. An elongate actuator is connected at one end to the drive circuitry. An opposite end of the actuator is displaceable towards and away from the substrate on receipt of an electrical signal from the drive circuitry. The actuator includes an interconnect portion that defines a transversely extending face and is received through a complementary opening defined in the walls and a fluid ejection member that is fast with said face. The interconnect portion and said opening are shaped so that movement of the fluid ejection member is controlled.

An inkjet drop ejection apparatus comprising: a chamber with a nozzle and an ink inlet for fluid communication with an ink supply; and, an actuator with associated drive circuitry for ejecting drops of ink through the nozzle; such that, the drive circuitry transmits a drive signal to the actuator wherein the drive signal has a voltage less than 10 volts. Limiting the actuator voltage to 10 V allows the drive circuitry to be CMOS circuitry rather than bi-polar. These voltages are compatible with CMOS and therefore the drive circuitry can be ‘on chip’ rather than ‘off chip’ with a large number of external connectors. Hence, all fabrication uses CMOS VLSI and MEMS processes and materials. By avoiding the need for many external connectors, the nozzle design is compact and the VLSI fabrication techniques are relatively low cost with high yield.

A digital still camera combines a display pattern received from a printing apparatus and a photographed image with each other, and displays the resultant image on a viewfinder. A user adjusts the balance between the display pattern and the image of the object both being displayed on the viewfinder, and depresses a shutter release button. The digital still camera fetches the photographed image. The digital still camera sends to the printing apparatus the fetched image and a pattern name specifying the display pattern used at the time of photographing. The printing apparatus combines the decoration pattern specified by the pattern and the image received from the digital still camera into composite image data. The printing apparatus prints the composite image data.
