Abstract: An article has a substrate and a pattern of a dry silver nanoparticle-containing composition comprising at least 20 weight % of one or more (a) polymers, that are cellulosic polymers; (d) silver nanoparticles having a mean particle size of 25-750 nm and present in an amount of 0.1-400 weight %, based on the total weight of the one or more (a) polymers; and (e) carbon black in an amount of 5-50 weight %, based on the total weight of the one or more (a) polymers. Such patterns can have multiple fine lines of any geometric arrangement. The article can have multiple patterns of this type, and each pattern can be electrolessly plated with a suitable metal such as copper to provide electrically-conductive product articles.

Abstract: A characteristic difference between first and second liquids is measured using a surface having a monolayer of a voltage sensitive chromophore that is covalently bound to the surface. The first liquid is brought into contact with the surface and it is irradiated with actinic radiation to measure a first fluorescence emission spectrum. The second liquid is also brought into contact with the surface and it is irradiated with actinic radiation to measure a second fluorescence emission spectrum. The first and second fluorescence emission spectra are compared to characterize a difference between the first and second fluids.

Abstract: A lithographic printing plate precursor has a substrate comprising a hydrophilic surface and two opposing edges; a radiation-sensitive imagable layer, and optionally, a protective layer disposed over that layer. The precursor has a shear droop at each opposing edge, each shear droop having a shear droop depth Y of 20-200 μm and a shear droop width X of 500-2000 μm. The precursor also has a hydrophilic coating band extending from each of the two opposing edges inwardly along the hydrophilic surface independently to provide a hydrophilic coating band width A of at least 1.5 times the shear droop width X. This hydrophilic coating band comprises amphoteric surfactant(s) in an amount greater than all other surfactants. Such individual precursors are obtained by cutting a continuous radiation-sensitive web into strips and such cutting creates the shear droop that can result in edge staining if the hydrophilic coating band is not present.

Abstract: An inkjet printhead assembly includes a repositionable shutter mechanism adapted to block a slot through which drops of ink ejected from the array of nozzles pass before they impinge on the print medium. The shutter mechanism includes a repositionable shutter blade extending in a cross-track direction having a pivot axis passing through first and second tabs affixed to its ends. A first slide mechanism component is pivotably attached to an end of an actuator rod, and a second slide mechanism component is rigidly attached to the repositionable shutter blade. An actuator is configured to translate the actuator rod, thereby pivoting the repositionable shutter blade about the pivot axis between a first pivot position where the shutter blade blocks the slot and a second pivot position where the shutter blade is moved away from the slot so that drops of ink can pass through the slot.

Abstract: A non-contact web guide includes a wall having a curved exterior surface and a hollow interior containing a pressurized liquid. A first row of liquid ejection holes is provided in proximity to the web guide entry position having axes that are inclined toward a downstream direction, and a second row of liquid ejection holes is provided in proximity to the web guide exit position having axes that are inclined toward an upstream direction. An intermediate array of liquid ejection holes is optionally provided. The pressurized liquid flows through the liquid ejection holes to force the web of media away from the bearing surface of the web guide. This configuration of liquid ejection holes provides the advantage that stable web guidance is achieved at low liquid flow rates.

Abstract: A method for printing image data with a printing system having a staggered array of overlapping printheads. Adjacent printheads overlap in the cross-track direction defining an overlap region such that image pixels corresponding to the overlap region can be printed with either first or second printheads. The method includes defining an initial row interval N and an initial position of a transition boundary within the overlap region. N rows of image pixels are then printed wherein image pixels on one side of the transition boundary are printed using the first printhead and image pixels on the other side of the transition boundary are printed using the second printhead. A random process is used to iteratively determine updated row intervals, where the position of the transition boundary is shifted by an increment amount of between one pixel and three pixels for each row interval.

Abstract: Foamable aqueous compositions can be foamed and applied to porous substrates to make light-blocking dry opacifying elements. Such compositions have 0.05-15 weight % of porous particles; at least 20 weight % of a binder; at least 0.0001 weight % of additives (including a surfactant); water; and at least 0.001 weight % of an opacifying colorant. Each porous particle includes a continuous polymeric phase and discrete pores; a mode particle size of 2-50 μm; and a porosity of 20-70 volume %. The continuous polymeric phase Tg is >80° C. and has a polymer viscosity of 80-500 centipoises at an ethyl acetate shear rate of 100 sec−1 at a concentration of 20 weight % at 25° C. The dry opacifying element light blocking value is at least 4 and has a luminous reflectance >40% as measured by the color space Y tristimulus value. The foamed aqueous composition has a foam density of 0.1-0.5 g/cm3.
