Abstract: A method of welding a component and a treated component are provided. The method comprises an initial heat-treating of the component comprising a substrate. The method further comprises removing a portion of the substrate to form a treatment region comprising an exposed surface. The method further comprises buttering the exposed surface with a first filler additive to form a weld metal adjacent to the fusion line comprising an easy-to-weld alloy. The method further comprises welding the component with the easy-to-weld alloy and a second filler additive. The first filler additive comprises a sufficient amount of each of Co, Cr, Mo, Fe, Al, Ti, Mn, C and Ni to form the easy-to-weld alloy, when welded with the hard-to-weld base alloy.

Abstract: A method of making a pre-sintered preform, including forming a pre-sintered preform by a binder jet additive manufacturing technique. The binder jet additive manufacturing technique includes depositing a first powder layer including a first powder and a second powder followed by depositing a first binder at a pre-determined location of the first powder layer. The binder jet additive manufacturing technique also includes depositing a second powder layer over at least a portion of the first powder layer followed by depositing a second binder at a pre-determined location of the second powder layer. At least a portion of the first binder and at least a portion of the second binder is cured forming a green part. The green part is then densified to form a pre-sintered preform near net shape component.

The method includes the step of welding the component with a filler additive comprising a sufficient amount of each of W, Co, Cr, Al, Ti, Mo, Fe, B, C, Nb, and Ni, the component including a hard-to-weld base alloy. The method further includes the step of forming an easy-to-weld target alloy on a surface of the component from the welding.

Abstract: A polyhedral-sealed article is disclosed including an article having a surface and a polyhedral seal layer disposed on the surface. The polyhedral seal layer includes a polyhedral structure having a plurality of polyhedral units. The polyhedral seal layer further includes at least one of a composition including an HTW composition, a heterogeneous pattern of the polyhedral structure, an orientation of the polyhedral structure extending from the surface at non-orthogonal angle, and at least one polyhedral unit conformation other than a hexagonal prism. A method for forming the polyhedral-sealed article is disclosed including forming a polyhedral seal layer by binder jet additive manufacturing and disposing the polyhedral seal layer on a surface of an article.

Abstract: At least one turbine component for a gas turbine includes a base component formed by casting and an article. The base component includes a platform. The article on the upper surface of the platform is formed by additive manufacturing. The article has a proximal face sized and shaped to cover at least a portion of the upper surface of the platform of the turbine component and a contoured distal face opposite the proximal face. The contoured distal face has a contour surface serving as at least a portion of a hot gas path surface of the turbine component. The contour surface is arranged and disposed to provide a controlled flow pattern of a working fluid across the contour surface based on a mounting location of the turbine component in a turbine. Methods of manufacturing articles and turbine components are also disclosed.

Abstract: A process includes forming a printed article having an external surface and at least one microfeature with an internal surface by additive manufacture, coating the external surface and the internal surface of the printed article with a metallic microlayer to form a coated article, and densifying the coated article to form a component. After formation, the printed article has a porosity such that the printed article is not at full density. A densified component includes a printed article having an external surface and at least one microfeature with an internal surface and a metallic microlayer coating the external surface and the internal surface of the printed article. The printed article is formed by additive manufacture.

Abstract: An article includes a substrate and a structure of additive manufacturing material of predetermined thickness attached to the substrate, the structure of additive manufacturing material formed by providing a metal alloy powder, forming an initial layer having a preselected thickness and a preselected shape including at least one aperture, with the metal alloy powder, sequentially forming an additional layer with the metal alloy powder over the initial layer, each of additional layers having an additional preselected thickness and an additional preselected shape including an aperture corresponding to the aperture in the initial layer, and joining each of the additional layers to the initial layer or any previously joined additional layers, forming a structure having a predetermined thickness and shape, and an aperture having a predetermined profile. The article includes a passageway through the structure including the aperture and a corresponding metering hole.

Abstract: An alloy is disclosed, including, by weight, about 13% to about 17% chromium, about 16% to about 20% molybdenum, about 1.5% to about 4% silicon, about 0.7% to about 2% boron, about 0.9% to about 2% aluminum, about 23% to about 27% nickel, about 0.8% to about 1.2% tantalum, and a balance of cobalt. The alloy includes a reduced occurrence of molybdenum silicide Laves phase relative to T800. A welded article is disclosed, including an article and a weld filler deposit joined to the article. The weld filler deposit includes a weld filler material including the alloy. A welding process is disclosed, including applying the weld filler material to the article and forming the weld filler deposit.

Abstract: An article and method of cooling an article are provided. The article includes a body portion having an inner surface and an outer surface, the inner surface defining an inner region, at least one up-pass cavity formed within the inner region and extending from a base of the body portion towards a tip of the body portion, and a cap formed in each up-pass cavity, each cap being adjacent to the tip of the body portion, having at least one aperture formed therein, and being arranged and disposed to direct fluid towards the tip of the body potion. The method includes directing a fluid into the first up-pass cavity, passing the fluid through at least one aperture in the cap, contacting the tip of the article with the fluid, receiving the post-impingement fluid within a down-pass cavity, and directing the post-impingement fluid through the down-pass cavity.
