摘要:
A lens element 1 is formed by making use of an optical substrate, and includes a lens portion 2, an edge portion 6 in the form of a circular arc provided along the circumference of the lens portion 2, and a handling portion 4 which is integrated with the lens portion 2 and the edge portion 6 as well and extends with a width wider than that of the lens portion 2. The handling portion 4 can be caught and held by chucking vacuum suction and so forth. The lens element 1 can be handled by catching the handling portion 4 without directly touching the lens element 1, and thus the lens element 1 is neither damaged nor contaminated, and stably handled with ease.

A method for forming many microlenses comparatively easily and effectively is provided. On one end of an optical substrate is formed a plurality of lens planes at regular intervals. Lens areas containing the lens planes are partially covered by an etching mask and etching processing is performed on areas being exposed outside the etching mask to remove the areas to a specified depth. While the lens planes formed on one surface of the optical substrate are being held by a support substrate, polishing processing is performed on another end face of the optical substrate and each microlens formed in the lens areas is separated from the support substrate.

An optical lens device assembly containing an optical lens device and an optical device sealed without causing complication of optical module configurations is provided. In the optical lens device assembly, a resin member having light transmittance is used to fill in space between the optical lens device and the optical device to be optically coupled to the optical lens device. The resin member is made from a resin material having a refractive index being different from that of the optical lens device. The resin member is used to seal a clearance between optical planes, which face each other, of the optical lens device and the optical device, and to mechanically couple the optical lens device to the optical device.

A polymer pattern forming method including the steps of (a) generating radicals in a pattern forming region of a matrix layer which uniformly contains a radical generating agent, thereby forming a patterned latent image due to the radicals in the pattern forming region; and (b) bringing a monomer which polymerizes by radical polymerization into contact with the matrix layer in which the patterned latent image has been or is being formed, to have the radicals which have been or are being generated induce a chain addition polymerization of the monomer so as to form a polymer pattern on the pattern forming region.

An optical lens device assembly is provided which is capable of being substantially free from a deviation in an optical axis of an optical lens caused by errors of its manufacturing, thus preventing a drop in coupling efficiency and enabling easy alignment of the optical axis of the optical lens. One of end faces of two optical lens is used as a lens plane and the two optical lens are optically in series coupled. The two optical lenses are placed in a manner that their non-lens planes face each other.

An optical waveguide having a clad and a core, the core being made of polymer material containing a repetitive unit having formula (1), (2) or (3): Each of these polymer materials has a higher glass transition temperature and lower water absorption than those of deuterated PMMA, has a transparency equivalent with that of deuterated PMMA, and shows neither light absorption nor scattering in the operating wavelength region. An optical waveguide with a core fabricated using these polymer materials is high in heat resistance and low in water absorption. Thus using the waveguide will successfully provide optical communication elements with an advanced durability against the environment.

A magneto-optical recording medium includes one selected from a compound of strontium titanate (SrTiOx), a compound of barium titanate (BaTiOx), a nitrogen compound of strontium titanate (SrTiOxNy), and a nitrogen compound of barium titanate (BaTiOxNy). The magneto-optical recording medium has a large value for the refractive index n and a small value for the extinction coefficient k; moreover, the medium is resistive against corrosions. For the magneto-optical recording medium, there is produced a protective film by simultaneously sputtering a film forming target and a composition adjusting target. The deposition of the protective film is achieved in a mixed atmosphere of an inert gas and oxygen or in a mixed gas of an inert gas and nitrogen.

A method of fabricating a microlens that serves to prevent damage thereto in the fabrication process is provided. First, a lens body of which the maximum height housed within a recess is lower than the height of the side wall of the recess is formed in the lens formation region by performing patterning that transfers the shape of a first resist pattern to a substrate by using the first resist pattern as an etching mask. Thereafter, a partial region of the substrate which is outside the lens formation region is removed to form an outline by using a second resist pattern as a mask.
