The supported metallocene catalyst for olefin polymerization is (nBuCp)2ZrCl2 impregnated onto a silica support having nBuSnCl3 and MAO tethered thereon. The catalyst is made by dehydroxylating silica, forming a silica/toluene slurry, injecting nBuSnCl3 into the slurry, refluxing the silica/toluene/nBuSnCl3 slurry, adding MAO dropwise to a slurry of the nBuSnCl3-functionalized silica in toluene, heating the mixture for several hours, reacting (nBuCp)2ZrCl2 in toluene solvent with the MAO/nBuSnCl3-functionalized silica support, and drying the catalyst under vacuum. The catalyst may be used, e.g., to catalyze copolymerization of ethylene with 1-hexene.

An activated clay for treating aromatic hydrocarbons, containing montmorillonite in an amount of not less than 34% by mass, having an SiO2/Al2O3 mol ratio in a range of 3.8 to 8.0, and desorbing ammonia in an amount in a range of 0.11 to 0.20 mmols/g as measured by the ammonia TPD method with the heat of adsorption in a range of 128 to 148 kJ/mol. The activated clay comprises an acid-treated product of smectite clay, imposes no limitation on the area where the starting clay is produced, and features long catalytic life free of dispersion in the properties.
