A system and method for the manufacture of hydrogen cyanide, acrylonitrile, and acetonitrile are provided. The system comprises at least one pulsed corona discharge reactor with each pulsed corona discharge reactor having a reaction zone. At least one reactant feed stream containing hydrogen is introduced into the pulsed corona discharge reactor and contacting the catalyst wherein hydrogen is removed from the reactant to form hydrogen cyanide, acrylonitrile, and acetonitrile.

The invention relates to a process for the partial oxidation of C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 hydrocarbons, using novel membranes formed from perovskitic or multi-phase structures, with a chemically active coating which demonstrate exceptionally high rates of fluid flux. The process uses membranes that are conductors of oxygen ions and electrons, which are substantially stable in air over the temperature range of 25.degree. C. to the operating temperature of the membrane.

A reactor for preparing hydrogen cyanide by the Andrussow process is provided. The reactor comprises at least one gas inlet which opens into a gas inlet region, an outlet for the reaction products and a catalyst, wherein at least one mixing element and at least one gas-permeable intermediate layer are within the reactor between the gas inlet region and the catalyst. The mixing element is arranged between the gas inlet region and the gas-permeable intermediate layer. A process for preparing HCN, in the reactor is also provided.
