The present invention pertains to a data storage device. The data storage device includes a storage medium having an electrode and an electrolyte layer positioned on the electrode. The data storage device also includes at least one probe configured to contact the electrolyte layer. In addition, the storage medium includes a voltage supply device configured to supply voltage through the at least one probe and the electrode to thereby create a circuit between the at least one probe and the electrode. The level of voltage supplied through the at least one probe allows at least one of writing, reading, and erasing operations on the one or more memory cells of the storage medium.

A printed circuit board is made by producing recesses and/or holes in an electric insulating substrate by laser ablation. The recesses correspond to a desired pattern of conductor structures and/or holes. Conductive material is then deposited on substantially an entire face of the substrate. Conductive material is then removed from the substrate outside the desired pattern of conductor structures and/or holes.

A novel, wide inkjet printhead and method of forming said inkjet printhead is disclosed, wherein a pattern of orifices are formed, using a step-and-repeat process, in a flexible tape using laser ablation or other suitable etching devices. The location of the orifices corresponds to where ink will be ejected from the inkjet printhead. The pattern of orifices may extend to any length without difficulty in aligning the orifices, since the tape may be continuous along the entire length of the printhead.

Selected portions of the orifice plate surfaces are formed to have wetting and non-wetting surface characteristics for minimizing the accumulation of residual ink on the outer surface of the plate and for enhancing the flow of supply ink to the orifices of the plate.

A method of manufacturing a thermal ink jet printhead wherein a reusable mandrel consisting of either a metal pattern on an insulating or semiconductive substrate or an insulating pattern on a metal substrate or metal layer is used in the process of electroforming a plurality of metal substrates used for starting a batch fabrication process. Next, thin film layers of insulating, resistive, and conductive materials are formed on the surfaces of the metal substrates to thereby define heater resistors and lead-in conductors for the plurality of thermal ink jet printheads being formed. Then, a barrier layer such as Vacrel is photodefined on the surface of the thin film insulating, resistive, and conductive layers to thereby define a plurality of ink drop ejection chambers surrounding each of the previously formed heater resistors. Next, a plurality of orifice plates are secured, respectively, to the barrier layers in each of the printheads being formed. Finally, the plurality of metal substrates may be removed from the mandrel, such as by stripping away, without the requirement for substrate dicing, and an appropriate mask on the mandrel may be used to create an ink feed hole in each of the metal substrates. The metal substrates are further provided with a break tab line during the electroforming process which is aligned with break patterns in both the above thin film layers and orifice plates. In this manner, the individual thin film printheads may be easily broken away and separated one from another.

A reusable mandrel and method of making a reusable mandrel is presented. This mandrel has a substrate with a conductive film layer. Upon the conductive film layer, a dielectric mold resides. An etched thin film mandrel is also presented. This mandrel has a substrate covered with a conductive film layer. This conductive film layer is etched to form a mold for the device to be manufactured. These mandrels facilitate the manufacture of high quality precision devices. In particular, they can be used to manufacture orifice plates for thermal ink jet printers by electrodeposition process.

The present invention provides a method of fabricating a nano-wire from a substrate. The method includes the step of etching the substrate to form a wire that projects from a surface of the etched substrate. The wire has a predetermined thickness. The method also includes the step of exposing side surface portions of the wire to a reactive gas to react material of the side portions with the reactive gas and form a reaction product. The method further includes the step of removing the reaction product to thin the wire below the predetermined thickness.

A color ink transfer printing device in which ink transfer is driven by a viscosity change in ink. The color ink transfer printing device includes a viscosity control unit and first through fourth ink containers for retaining colored ink held under pressure. Each of the ink containers retains a different color ink. The first through fourth ink containers are respectively associated with first through fourth perforated ink transfer surfaces. Under ambient conditions, the viscosity of the colored ink prevents flow of the colored ink through the perforations. The viscosity control unit induces a change in the viscosity of the colored ink near certain perforations, thereby enabling a controlled amount of the colored ink near each of the certain perforations to flow through these certain perforations and onto the ink transfer surface corresponding thereto. The colored ink which has flowed onto the ink transfer surface can then be transferred to an intermediate surface or a printing media. A method for viscosity-driven color ink transfer printing is also disclosed. The present invention enables a color printer, a color copier, or the like to provide high resolution printed images at low cost.
