Abstract: Reaction mixtures comprising components (A) Group II metal salts of phosphorus-containing acids, (B) basically reacting alkali metal compounds, and (C) optionally, di- or trivalent metal-containing salts are suitable for the preparation of basic metal salt compositions of phosphorus-containing acids, with the proviso that components (A), (B), and (C) are not the same. The basic metal salt compositions are useful in the preparation of lubricants.

Abstract: Lubricants useful in metal working processes, especially drawing, comprise an oil of lubricating viscosity; a carboxylic acid or derivative thereof, especially an anhydride of a hydrocarbon-substituted succinic acid in which the substituent contains about 6-30 carbon atoms; and a phosphorus acid salt, usually a zinc salt of a phosphorodithioic acid. The lubricant may also contain other ingredients, especially chlorinated wax or mixtures of aliphatic alcohols and hydrocarbons. Said lubricant provides improved lubricity, corrosion resistance, cleanability, anti-wear properties and extreme pressure properties when used in the working operation.

Abstract: Hydroxy aromatic compositions containing (a) a hydroxyl group bonded directly to a carbon of an aromatic nucleus, (b) a hydrocarbon-based substituent of at least about 50 aliphatic carbon atoms bonded directly to a carbon atom of an aromatic nucleus, (c) at least one methylol or lower hydrocarbyl substituted methylol substituent bonded directly to a carbon atom of an aromatic nucleus, and not having any alkylene linkages between carbon atoms of two aromatic nuclei are useful as additives for normally liquid fuels and lubricating oils. These hydroxy aromatic compositions are also useful as intermediates for preparing other additives for fuels and lubricants. Typical hydroxy aromatic compositions of the present invention are formed by reaction of formaldehyde with an alkenyl- or alkyl-substituted phenol wherein the alkyl or alkenyl substituent contains an average of about 50 carbon atoms.

Abstract: This invention is directed to an oil soluble dispersant and to a process for preparing said dispersant which comprises contacting and reacting at least one carboxylic-acylating agent having at least about 30 aliphatic carbon atoms per molecule with effective amounts of at least one hydroxy compound, at least one polyoxyalkylene polyamine having an average molecular weight of at least about 200 and from zero to about 4.0 equivalents of at least one alkylene amine per equivalent of said carboxylic-acylating agent. The dispersant of this invention is particularly useful as an additive for a variety of oleaginous materials including, for example, fuels, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids and the like.
