A vehicle wheel rolling bearing has a sealing device integrated with a magnetic encoder. A semi-float type bearing apparatus has said rolling bearing which can protect a magnetic encoder and improve the sensing ability of the detecting sensor. The rolling bearing has an inner member with a wheel hub having a wheel mounting flange and an inner ring formed with inner raceway surfaces. An outer member is formed with double row outer raceway surfaces opposite the inner raceway surfaces. Double row rolling elements are between the raceway surfaces. Sealing devices include an inboard sealing device with an annular seal fitted on the outer member. A pulsar ring is mounted on the inner member and has an encoder mounted on a cylindrical holding portion. The encoder is arranged opposite to the annular seal. The encoder includes magnetic poles formed by magnetic powder with alternating polarity along its circumferential direction. A detecting sensor passes through the cylindrical portion of the seal and opposes the encoder. A predetermined air gap is kept between the encoder and detecting sensor.

The wheel bearing device includes an outer ring having double rows of race surfaces formed on its inner circumference; a wheel hub having one of the double rows of race surfaces formed on its outer circumference; an inner ring press-fitted over a reduced diameter step portion of the wheel hub and having the other of the race surfaces formed on its outer circumference; and double rows of rollers interposed on the respective race surfaces between the outer ring and the wheel hub and between the outer ring and the inner ring. The wheel bearing device is configured such that an end portion of the reduced diameter step portion of the wheel hub is swaged to thereby integrate the wheel hub with the inner ring, and a joint outer ring of a constant velocity universal joint is fitted into an inner diameter of the wheel hub via torque transmission means, allowing the swaged portion of the wheel hub to abut the shoulder portion of the joint outer ring. The swaged portion of the wheel hub is left non-quenched, whereas the surface-hardened abutted portion of the shoulder portion of the joint outer ring has a surface roughness of Ra 5.0 or more.

A sensor holder is a leaf spring folded in two and has upper and lower portions having windows aligned with each other and a downwardly protruding rib and an upwardly protruding rib, respectively, and a connecting portion. The sensor is inserted through these windows until a rib formed on the connecting portion engages in a groove formed in the back of the sensor. The holder is mounted on the outer member until the downwardly protruding rib and upwardly protruding rib engage in grooves formed in a ledge axially protruding from one end of the outer ring and the sensor is received in a cutout formed in the ledge. In this state, the holder is strained, thereby elastically holding the sensor in the cutout formed in the ledge.
