Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for position-based actions using light-based communication (LCom). LCom signals can be used to encode or otherwise provide data which in turn can be used to help determine the position of a device receiving those LCom signals. Therefore, LCom can be used to facilitate various actions based on, for example, the position of an LCom receiver determined using data received via the LCom signals. There are numerous use cases for position-based actions using LCom, such as security applications, check-in applications, payments based on location, permissions, and access to information that can all be tied to a location. Actions may include temporarily disabling or enabling the LCom receiver hardware or software (such as disabling device cameras in high security areas), providing another security layer as a result of knowing the device position, and using the LCom receiver position as a part of a larger process.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for assessing the conditions of LEDs and power supplies of solid state lighting systems. The techniques can be used, for example, to measure the capacitance of an output capacitor C in a switch-mode power supply (SMPS), and to measure the condition of the LEDs being driven by that power supply. In some cases, this assessment can be implemented in a lighting controller that controls the lighting system, which may be configured to simultaneously determine C and the conditions of LEDs. In one example case, the techniques can be implemented, for instance, in a micro-controller operating the lighting system. A lighting system implementing the techniques can be periodically assessed so as to provide real-time diagnostic capability. Numerous example embodiments of SMPS LED lighting systems will be apparent in light of this disclosure.

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for maintaining consistent lumen output of a lighting assembly over time. By maintaining a consistent lumen output, it is possible to maintain acceptable color stability where color mixing of multiple outputs is used. The lighting assembly may be any lighting configuration that might suffer from lumen depreciation and/or color drift over time, and may include any type(s) of light source(s) that may be monitored and driven accordingly. The lighting assembly, in addition to light source(s), includes a photo detector and a directed light source, such as a laser. The directed light source provides a golden sample for use in calibrating the photo detector, which in turn monitors lumen output of the light source(s). Drive signals are adjusted to account for lumen depreciation of the monitored light source(s).

Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for enhancing indoor navigation using light-based communication (LCom). In some embodiments, an LCom-enabled luminaire configured as described herein may include access to a sensor configured to detect a given hazardous condition. In response to detection of a hazard, the LCom-enabled luminaire may adjust its light output, transmit an LCom signal, or both, in accordance with some embodiments. A given LCom signal may include data that may be utilized by a recipient computing device, for example, in providing emergency evacuation routing or other indoor navigation with hazard avoidance, emergency assistance, or both. In a network of such luminaires, data distribution via inter-luminaire communication may be provided, in accordance with some embodiments, via an optical interface or other wired or wireless communication means. In some cases, the network may include a luminaire that is not LCom-enabled yet still configured for inter-luminaire communication.

Abstract: There is herein described a method for forming a ceramic wavelength converter assembly which achieves a direct bonding of an alumina-based ceramic wavelength converter to an alumina-based ceramic substrate such as polycrystalline or sapphire. The method comprises applying a silica-containing layer between the converter and the substrate and then applying heat to bond the converter to the substrate to form the ceramic wavelength converter assembly. Because direct bonding is achieved, the ceramic wavelength converter may operate at much higher incident light powers than conventional silicone glue-bonded converters.

Systems and methods dynamically provide a predetermined recovery time between communication messages calculated from forward and response message types and/or length, and a model of the energy reserve in the network devices to allow time for energy storage circuits in the devices to charge. In addition or alternatively, systems and methods provide an extra recovery time between messages to allow the bus voltage to recover from a fold-back mode and/or include an extra current limit circuit to increase a power supply current when the combined energy required by the network devices is greater than a current limit on a power supply.

Abstract: Light control films, and lighting devices including the same, are disclosed. The light control films include a single layer of light transmitting material having a first side and a second side. A plurality of first microstructures are formed in the first side. The first microstructures are configured to receive incident light from a light source and produce an off axis (e.g. batwing) light distribution in a field downstream of the second side of the light control film. In some embodiments, a plurality of second microstructures is formed on the second side of the light control films and are configured to reduce the glare produced by light emitted from the light source passing through the film.

Abstract: Methods and system to determine the health of wireless mesh networks are provided. Each radio node of a wireless mesh network transmits Link Quantification Messages (LQMs) interPAN at maximum power to enable adjacent nodes to determine the Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) on the wireless link to that radio node. Each radio node also transmits LQMs at successively lower power levels. The adjacent nodes detect a power level at measurable packet error rate to determine a noise floor for the wireless link. An aggregator collects link quantification information from the radio nodes and forms an intercommunication matrix for the wireless network. The RSSI and power level at measurable packet error rate information is used to remove unreliable links from the intercommunication matrix. Nodes are ranked and the reliability and dependability of the nodes is calculated to show the network health.

Abstract: Techniques are provided for bi-directional communication between a power supply and one or more light engines (and/or other lighting system components) via the existing power lines so that no additional communication wires are needed. In particular, the power supply can transmit information by modulating its output (voltage or current) and the light engine (or other lighting componentry, such as a sensor) can communicate back by modulating how much power it draws from the power supply. Any suitable type of modulation scheme can be used, and a master-slave arrangement can be used to control the bi-directional communication if so desired, so as to avoid multiple devices communicating over the power line communication channel at the same time. Other embodiments allow a multiple simultaneous communications over the power line communication channel.
