    摘要: A high power laser source having a preselected broad bandwidth, including a master oscillator providing a single-mode laser beam, a resonant electro-optical modulator and a source of radio-frequency (rf) modulation voltage, to produce a modulator output beam having sidebands spaced on each side of the nominal frequency of the single-mode laser beam. The bandwidth and the number of modes may be varied by controlling the voltage applied to the modulator. At least one additional modulator in series with the first provides for the addition of other sidebands overlaying those generated with just one modulator. In another embodiment of the invention, the modulator is installed in a PC MOPA (phase conjugated master oscillator power amplifier) configuration to provide modulation only on the return path of the beam from a phase conjugation device having a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) medium. Because the electro-optical modulator is sensitive to polarization direction, it can be oriented to be effective only for the return beam, which has a different direction of polarization from that of the single-mode laser beam, thus optimizing the performance of the SBS medium.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for stabilizing the transverse mode of laser oscillation in a vertical cavity semiconductor laser and a microchip laser are disclosed. A preferred embodiment includes a quantum-well region formed over a semiconductor substrate. A first reflective surface is formed over the quantum-well region, and a second reflective surface is formed over the substrate, opposite the first reflective surface, forming a laser cavity. The quantum-well region is optically pumped, producing laser oscillation. The absorbed pump power causes a thermal lensing effect within the semiconductor material, stabilizing the transverse spatial mode of the laser cavity. The radius of curvature of the thermal lens is a function of absorbed pump power. Maximum power conversion efficiency is achieved if the pump power is controlled such that the diameter of the oscillating mode matches the diameter of the pump beam. The invention has applications in optical communication and laser printing.

    摘要: A laser structure that reduces thermally-induced mounting stress on low fracture strength solid-state laser rods. A transparent sleeve of relatively high strength optical material that has relatively high thermal conductivity is provided around the laser rod, and a thin layer of elastomer is provided between the laser material and the transparent sleeve. This arrangement of laser material, transparent sleeve, and elastomer allows sealing of a cooling fluid flow channel disposed around the laser/sleeve assembly using conventional means without applying stress directly to the laser rod material. This reduces the risk of fracturing the laser rod material due to thermal expansion near the seal and allows the laser to be operated at higher average power levels. The elastomer layer and high thermal conductivity sleeve efficiently conduct heat from the laser rod to the surrounding cooling liquid. This structure also minimizes damage to the surface of the strengthened laser rods due to handling and coolant erosion thereby preserving the thermal stress fracture resistance properties of the laser rod during transport, manufacturing assembly, operation, and maintenance.

    摘要: A low divergence laser oscillator of the kind wherein an intra-cavity oscillator beam is propagated along a resonator axis and within a portion of the volume of the active medium and wherein a part of the intra-cavity oscillator beam intensity is coupled out of the oscillator by a first outcoupler as an extra-cavity beam. One of the oscillator beam is expanded and collimated so as to produce an expanded and collimated extra-cavity beam having a cross-sectional area substantially greater than the cross-sectional area of a portion of the active medium. Substantially the total intensity of the expanded collimated extra-cavity beam is introduced into the active medium so as to fill a volume of the active medium which is substantially greater than the volume of the above portion, thereby giving rise to amplification of the reintroduced beam. A polarizing element located within the resonator is used for the introducing. The intra-cavity beam is either transmitted through or reflected by the polarizing element while the extra-cavity beam is directed onto the polarizing element or transmitted therethrough without passing through said first outcoupler, a second outcoupling means being provided for coupling out the amplified beam.
