Abstract: A composite article includes a multilayer barrier assembly bonded to a substrate, and a top polymer layer bonded to the multilayer barrier assembly opposite the substrate. The multilayer barrier assembly comprises a base polymer layer and a base inorganic barrier layer. The base polymer layer comprises a polymerized reaction product of polymerizable components comprising at least one di(meth)acrylate represented by the formula
Each R1 independently represents H or methyl; each R2 independently represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; x=0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; and z=0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, with the provisos that at least one of x and z is not zero and 1≤x+z≤4. Methods of making the same are also disclosed.-

Abstract: An optical assembly including an optical element insert molded directly onto an optical stack is provided. The optical stack includes an optical film and may include a liner with the optical film being disposed between the optical element and the liner. The liner, if included, is removable from the optical film without substantial damage to the optical film. An outermost layer of the optical film may be diffusion bonded to a major surface of the optical element.

Abstract: Urea (multi)-(meth)acrylate (multi)-silane precursor compounds, synthesized by reaction of (meth)acrylated materials having isocyanate functionality with aminosilane compounds, either neat or in a solvent, and optionally with a catalyst, such as a tin compound, to accelerate the reaction. Also described are articles including a substrate, a base (co)polymer layer on a major surface of the substrate, an oxide layer on the base (co)polymer layer; and a protective (co)polymer layer on the oxide layer, the protective (co)polymer layer including the reaction product of at least one urea (multi)-(meth)acrylate (multi)-silane precursor compound synthesized by reaction of (meth)acrylated materials having isocyanate functionality with aminosilane compounds. The substrate may be a (co)polymer film or an electronic device such as an organic light emitting device, electrophoretic light emitting device, liquid crystal display, thin film transistor, or combination thereof. Methods of making the urea (multi)-(meth)acrylate (multi)-silanes and their use in composite films and electronic devices are described.

Abstract: A curable composition comprises at least one polymerizable compound and alpha-alumina particles. The alpha-alumina particles, taken as a whole, have a DV50 of less than 100 nanometers. The corresponding cured composition, and an abrasion-resistant article comprising an abrasion-resistant layer comprising the reaction product disposed on a substrate are also disclosed. A method that includes thermoforming the abrasion-resistant article is also disclosed.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a method of making an orthodontic article. The method includes (a) providing a photopolymerizable composition; (b) selectively curing the photopolymerizable composition using actinic radiation to form an article in the shape of an orthodontic article including a number of layers of at least one photopolymerized polymer; and (c) moving the article and thereby generating a mass inertial force in the uncured photopolymerizable composition. The article has a first surface, and no more than 75% of the first surface has a slope magnitude greater than 2.5 degrees. Orthodontic articles are also provided, including an orthodontic article that is prepared according to the method. Orthodontic articles having low extractable component content are further provided. The mass inertial force tends to form a coating layer of uncured photopolymerizable composition on the article, and curing the coating layer can form a surface having low slope magnitude. The low slope magnitude may be correlated to a low haze of the surface of the article.

Abstract: An orthodontic article is described comprising a cured composition comprising the reaction product of free-radically polymerizable resin comprising at least one monomer, oligomer and/or polymer, comprising at least two (meth)acryl moieties; a monofunctional reactive diluent; and a polymer or macromolecule comprising a free-radical photoinitiator group. The polymer or macromolecule has a molecular weight of at least 500 g/mole. In one embodiment, the cured composition comprises a first and second photoinitiator wherein at least one is a polymer or macromolecule. Also described are photopolymerizable compositions and methods.

The components include 1) an isocyanate; 2) a (meth)acrylate mono-ol; 3) a polycarbonate diol; and 4) a catalyst. Further, the present disclosure provides a method of making an orthodontic article. The method includes obtaining a photopolymerizable composition and selectively curing the photopolymerizable composition to form an orthodontic article. Further, methods are provided, including receiving, by a manufacturing device having one or more processors, a digital object comprising data specifying an orthodontic article; and generating, with the manufacturing device by an additive manufacturing process, the orthodontic article based on the digital object. A system is also provided, including a display that displays a 3D model of an orthodontic article; and one or more processors that, in response to the 3D model selected by a user, cause a 3D printer to create a physical object of an orthodontic article.

Abstract: A method of making an infrared-reflecting optically transparent assembly comprises: coating a curable composition onto a major surface of an optically transparent thermoplastic polymer film; at least partially curing the curable composition, which may be optionally at least partially dried, to provide a thermoformable composite film; and laminating the thermoformable composite film to an infrared-reflecting multilayer optical film to provide the infrared-reflecting optically transparent assembly. The curable composition comprises urethane (meth)acrylate compound, (meth)acrylate monomer, and silicone (meth)acrylate. The infrared-reflecting optically transparent assembly and methods of including it in an infrared-reflecting lens assembly are also disclosed.
