The invention relates to a method for operating an internal combustion engine operable in compression ignition mode, said engine comprising a fuel supply means, a piston in each cylinder causing ignition during compression ignition mode, at least one inlet and one exhaust valve, a control unit that controls the valve timing and fuel quantity, and at least one sensor for measuring an engine operation parameter. The following steps are performed when switching from spark ignition to compression ignition mode: controlling the exhaust and intake valves to perform a negative valve overlap to retain exhaust residual gas, determining a current combustion phasing timing, and correcting the combustion phasing by increasing the retained exhaust residual gas fraction by stepwise control of a combustion related parameter. The gas exchange valves of the non-fired cylinders are maintained closed for the duration of the partial-load operation and the associated gas intake valve and/or gas discharge valve is opened only briefly solely to influence the charge quantity during the piston passage through bottom dead center.

The piston engine is equipped with a valve actuator permitting variable opening and closing times. An engine control system of the piston engine determines a current actual value of an exhaust gas mass proportion. The value forms the contents of the cylinders together with a fresh gas mass proportion after the fresh gas has been supplied and before combustion. The engine control system actuates the valve actuator in order to set a desired value for the exhaust gas mass proportion.

A system and method are described for reducing engine vibration during cylinder deactivation in selected operating conditions. The method utilizes open valve deactivation to better match the cylinder pressure of deactivated cylinders to combusting cylinders. This mode is utilized, along with cylinder closed valve cylinder deactivation, to improve overall fuel economy, while at the same time reducing vibration felt by the vehicle driver.
