    摘要: Systems, devices and methods are disclosed for treating fractures. The systems, devices and methods may include one or both of an implant, such as an intramedullary nail, and a fastening assembly, such as a lag screw and compression screw assembly. The implant in some embodiments has a proximal section with a transverse aperture and a cross-section that may be shaped to more accurately conform to the anatomical shape of cortical bone and to provide additional strength and robustness in its lateral portions, preferably without requiring significant additional material. The fastening assembly may be received to slide, in a controlled way, in the transverse aperture of the implant. In some embodiments, the engaging member and the compression device are configured so that the compression device interacts with a portion of the implant and a portion of the engaging member to enable controlled movement between the first and second bone fragments. This configuration is useful for, among other things, compressing a fracture.

    摘要: An optical screening method and apparatus for identifying both the morphology and selected characteristics or properties expressed by cells, such as cancer cells. The cells are combined with one or more different sets of microspheres, each set having a reactant bond thereto which will bind to a specific molecule which can exist on one or more types of cancer cells. The cells and microspheres are formed as a smear on a slide, stained with a histological type stain and optically viewed to identify the type of cells to which the different sets of microspheres do or do not bind. The different sets of microspheres are optically differentiated by having different optical characteristics, such as size, shape, color or combinations thereof. A fast cancer cell screening method or panel is provided by adding different sets of microspheres having different reactants bound thereto to different sample portions and optically screening the different sample smears. The microspheres also can be removed from a sample portion with any cells bound thereto and compared to another non-modified sample portion to ascertain if the cancer cells of interest have been removed from the sample portion.

    摘要: Functionalized magnetic particles are emerging as a reliable and convenient technique in the purification of biomacromolecules (proteins and nucleic acids). We disclose a novel coupling procedure that can be used to create stable ferromagnetic nickel particles coated with Protein A for the affinity purification of antibody. The protein purification procedure is gentle, scalable, automatable, efficient and economical. By modifying the functional groups of amino acids in the protein coating, nickel particles can be used not only for affinity purification but for other sample preparation and chromatographic applications as well including nucleic acid isolations. The method can be easily modified for small and medium scale antibody purification in lab and pre-clinical research.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for storing and retrieving information to and from a memory of a hand-held audio database device. The audio database device includes a graphics display provided on a hand-held housing for displaying graphical information. A microphone and a speaker are provided on the housing to receive and broadcast audio information from and to a user, respectively. The audio database device includes a memory configured to store graphical icons and to support a hierarchical memory structure comprising categories, wherein the icons graphically represent the categories. A user-actuated navigation control is provided on the housing and permits a user to navigate the categories in the hierarchical memory structure and to select a desired category. A processor is coupled to the memory, the display, and the navigation control and effects displaying of one of the icons on the display when the user is navigating a corresponding one of the categories, and storing of the audio information in the desired category of the memory.
