    摘要: A nanostructured substrate is disclosed having a plurality of substrate openings disposed between the nanostructures on the substrate. When a desired fluid comes into contact with the substrate, at least a portion of the fluid is allowed to pass through at least one of the openings. In a first embodiment, the fluid is caused to pass through the openings by causing the fluid to penetrate the nanostructures. In a second embodiment, the substrate is a flexible substrate so that when a mechanical force is applied to the substrate, such as a bending or stretching force, the distance between nanoposts or the diameter of nanocells on the substrate increases and the liquid penetrates the nanostructures. In another embodiment, a first fluid, such as water, is prevented from penetrating the nanostructures on the substrate while a second fluid is permitted to pass through the substrate via the openings in the substrate.

The micro-protruding structure is fabricated by growing a linear material of a carbon nano-tube from the bottom of the hole structure perforated by a focused ion beam. This permits a direction from the bottom of the hole structure to the opening to become nearly in alignment with the direction of the linear material that protrudes from the hole structure.

    摘要: A microfluidic chip formed with multiple fluid channels terminating at a common electrospray ionization tip for mass spectrometric analysis. The fluid channels may be formed within a substrate plate that are in fluid communication with corresponding reservoirs. The electrospray tip can be formed along a defined portion of the substrate plate, wherein the electrospray tip includes an open-tip region at which the fluid channels converge. A top laminate plate may substantially enclose most portions of the fluid channels formed in the bottom polymer plate except for the open-tip region. Another aspect of the invention provides methods for conducting mass spectrometric analysis of multiple samples flowing through individual fluid channels in a single microfluidic chip that is formed with a convergent electrospray tip. The convergent electrospray tip includes an open or exposed distal pointed tip region.

    摘要: A bioreactor or cell culture surface comprises a multiplicity of microwells appearing, upon enlargement in the range of 200 to 1000 magnifications, as a honeycomb structure consisting of a plurality of rows of irregular hexagons, each having a transverse x-axis, a longitudinal y-axis, and a z-axis which defines a height of each microwell. Co-parallel major bases define the directionality of anticipated cell growth, while pairs of equilateral minor bases define the x-axis width of each microwell. An arrow-like geometry is defined by the equilateral pairs of minor bases which also define an x-axis separation between opposing major bases of the hexagon to induce cell growth directionality. An acute angle exists between the members of the arrow-like pairs of minor bases, while an obtuse angle exists between contiguous major and minor bases.

    摘要: An optical multipath switch with electrically switchable photonic crystals.The invention involves the construction of optical multipath switches based on electrically switchable photonic crystals.A filled photonic crystal, switchable electrically and/or by light, is used as a tunable mirror. By creating selective optical deformations in the photonic crystal, its properties can be influenced in selected areas in terms of transmission capability. This is done preferably by application of a strong electrical field. Light is coupled in and out via fixed photonic mirrors located at an angle to the photonic crystal.The optical switches of the invention find application in switching networks and serve the purpose of service selection. A very high packing density may be achieved.
