A vehicle has a power system, in which an engine, a motor, a torque converter, a transmission, and an axle are connected in series. The transmission has a mechanism of varying a gear ratio under the control of a control unit. A driver of the vehicle operates a specific switch for setting a deceleration to specify a desired deceleration by means of power source braking. In response to an ON operation of a snow mode switch, a possible range of setting of the deceleration is restricted to a specific area that does not cause any slip or skid of the vehicle. The control unit totally controls the torque of the motor and the gear ratio, thereby implementing the braking at the desired deceleration. This arrangement attains the desired deceleration specified by the driver in the wide possible range of the setting, while restricting the deceleration to a specific range according to the driving conditions of the vehicle.

A target output torque and target power generation output of a motor are computed based on a vehicle running state, and a target input rotation speed of a generator is computed based on the target power generation output. The final target output torque of the motor is computed by performing delay processing on the target output torque using a filter of second or higher order. The same delay processing by an identical filter is performed on the target input rotation speed, and the final target input rotation speed supplied to the generator is computed. In this way, the response of the driving power output (=power consumption of the motor) and the generated power of the generator are made to coincide even if the vehicle running state changes sharply, and the battery capacity can be minimized.

In an electronic control for a hybrid vehicle which is driven either by an engine or an electric motor, or both, possible failures in an ignition system and a rotation sensor system are detected during a period in which the engine is rotated by the motor with no fuel supply. Only after no failure is found, the engine is started by supplying fuel and performing ignition. Thus, the fuel supplied to the engine is ignited without fail, and unburned gas release to the atmosphere is surely prevented. Also, good drivability is maintained. In case the invention is applied to a series hybrid vehicle which is driven solely by an electric motor powered by a battery which is charged by an electric generator driven by an engine, the ignition system is diagnosed when the engine is not rotating. After it is determined that there is no failure in the ignition system, the engine is started.
