The present invention relates to a shifter for controlling the transmission of a motor vehicle, the shifter comprising: an rotatably mounted actuation element; a sensor assembly comprising a first element having a plurality of binary sensors and a second element having a trigger device, wherein one of the first element and second element is rigidly coupled to the actuation element a control unit for determining an angular position of the actuation element based on an input signal from the sensor assembly; wherein the sensor assembly comprises at least three binary sensors, the binary sensors and the trigger device are arranged in such a way that each binary sensor corresponds to one trigger line of the trigger device, wherein said trigger line comprises a plurality of trigger elements that are arranged to be individually detectable by said binary sensor, and wherein the trigger elements are distributed along the trigger lines in such a way that at least one but not all of the binary sensors are able to detect the presence of a trigger element for each angular position of the actuation element. The invention also relates to a method for controlling the transmission of a motor vehicle by means of a shifter.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing an advised driving speed to a driver of a vehicle travelling on a road network is disclosed. The method comprises determining an advised driving speed of a vehicle for a portion of the road network currently being traversed, determining a current speed of the vehicle on the portion of the road network, and determining a speed limit and/or an expected driving speed for the portion of the road network. An indication of the advised driving speed is then provided to the driver of the vehicle when: (i) the current speed of the vehicle is greater than a first threshold value based on the advised driving speed; and (ii) the speed limit and/or the expected driving speed is greater than a second threshold value. A method and apparatus is also disclosed for determining a score indicative of the compliance of a driver of a vehicle to an advised driving speed during a journey on a road network.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for providing an indication to a driver of a geared vehicle that the vehicle is not in an optimal gear is disclosed. The method comprises determining a current gear of the vehicle and determining a current speed of a drive unit of the vehicle. An indication is then provided to the driver of the vehicle that the vehicle is not in an optimal gear when: (i) the determined current speed of the drive unit is greater than a predetermined threshold; and (ii) the determined current gear of the vehicle is less than a maximum gear of the vehicle. A method and apparatus is also disclosed for determining a score indicative of the amount of time during a journey on a road network that a geared vehicle is driven in an optimal gear.

An apparatus includes a fuel consumption module, a power output module, and a transmission module. The fuel consumption module is structured to monitor a fuel consumption rate of a vehicle. The power output module is structured to determine a power output of an engine of the vehicle. The transmission module is structured to determine a transmission setting of a manual transmission based on a current power output of the vehicle, wherein the determined transmission setting corresponds with the lowest fuel consumption rate. The transmission module is also structured to provide an indication to an operator of the vehicle regarding the determined transmission setting to facilitate operator selection of the determined transmission setting.
