The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for rapid analysis of members of a combinatorial library. The apparatus includes a plurality of vessels for containing individual library members and a fluid handling system that apportions a test fluid about equally between each of the vessels. This allows for simultaneous screening of library members by detecting changes in test fluid following contact with individual library members. Fluid flow through each of the vessels is controlled using passive flow restrictors or active flow controllers to ensure that each library member contacts approximately the same amount of test fluid per unit time. The disclosed apparatus is especially useful for screening library members based on their ability to catalyze the conversion of fluid reactants.

The invention provides a system and method for synthesizing chemicals onto supports in a parallel manner to produce a combinatorial collection of compounds. The system includes a plurality of middle plates, with each middle plate defining a plurality of reaction zones arranged in a two dimensional array. The reaction zones are adapted to receive a solid support, such as a sheet of membrane, and the middle plates are stackable on each other to form a three dimensional array of reaction zones. The system also includes a pair of end plates, where the middle plates are located between the end plates, and where the end plates include an array of fluid guides corresponding to the array of reaction zones, to allow for selective routing of reagents through the reaction zones.

The inputting subsystem comprises three or more sample vessels, which can be connected to the processing apparatus. Since the processing system includes multiple sample vessels, which can be grouped into different groups so that each group contains two or more of the multiple sample vessels. High throughput materials transport can be realized by sequentially connecting different groups of sample vessels to the processing apparatus, thereby overcoming a limitation of the prior art that cannot continuously perform multiple batches of materials processing and improving material processing efficiency.
