A new polymerization process (atom transfer radical polymerization, or ATRP) based on a redox reaction between a transition metal (e.g., Cu(I)/Cu(II), provides “living” or controlled radical polymerization of styrene, (meth)acrylates, and other radically polymerizable monomers. Using various simple organic halides as model halogen atom transfer precursors (initiators) and transition metal complexes as a model halogen atom transfer promoters (catalysts), a “living” radical polymerization affords (co)polymers having the predetermined number average molecular weight by Δ[M]/[I]0 (up to Mn>105) and a surprisingly narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn), as low as 1.15. The participation of free radical intermediates in ATRP is supported by end-group analysis and stereochemistry of the polymerization. In addition, polymers with various topologies (e.g., block, random, star, end-functional and in-chain functional copolymers [for example, of styrene and methyl (meth)acrylate]) have been synthesized using the present process. The polymeric products encompassed by the present invention can be widely used as plastics, elastomers, adhesives, emulsifiers, thermoplastic elastomers, etc.

A polyvinyl alcohol copolymer latex composition comprises an intimate polymer composition obtained from 10% to 60% by weight of a substantially hydrolyzed low molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH); 2% to 80% by weight of at least one diene; 2% to 80% by weight of at least one hydrophobic monomer other than a diene and optionally either up to 10% by weight of at least one hydrophilic ethylenically unsaturated acid monomer or up to 40% by weight of a cationic monomer. The copolymer latex composition can be prepared as an emulsion from an aqueous blend of the above listed monomers which are generally added at various stages during the polymerization and a free radical initiator, surfactants, and, if desirable, chain transfer agents. Up to 80% of the PVOH may be added after the monomers have been polymerized.

Processes for utilizing various emulsion polymerization procedures for preparing aqueous nanocomposite dispersions are disclosed. The disclosed processes include both in-situ polymerizations in the presence of at least partially exfoliated unmodified clays as well as admixtures of polymer dispersions with at least partially exfoliated unmodified clay dispersions. The disclosed nanocomposite dispersions are useful for preparing a variety of materials, such as coatings, adhesives, caulks, sealants, plastics additives, and thermoplastic resins. Processes for preparing polymer clay nanocomposite powders and use of these powders as plastic resin and plastics additives are also disclosed.

Water-soluble or water-dispersible hotmelt adhesives are prepared using graft copolymers produced by graft copolymerizing olefinically unsaturated monomers onto polyalkylene oxides. The adhesives additionally contain at least one resin which improves tackiness and the compatibility of the adhesive components. Other components such as polymers, plasticizers, and additives may also be present. The adhesives are especially suited for use in the labelling of recyclable or reuseable hollow containers. The adhesive may be completely separated from the hollow containers and dissolved in an alkaline washing liquor even at low temperatures.
