A lockup clutch of an automatic transmission is controlled so that no shock is produced while the vehicle is running within a predetermined gear stage. The automatic transmission includes a fluid coupling; a lockup clutch provided in the fluid coupling; a shift selector for selecting a range; a vehicle speed sensor for detecting vehicle speed, and a throttle opening sensor for detecting throttle opening. A control unit determines a gear stage in accordance with the selected range, the vehicle speed and the throttle opening, decides a shift, produces a shifting output signal, decides ON or OFF for the lockup clutch in accordance with the selected range, the vehicle speed and the throttle opening, and produces a lockup ON/OFF output signal. An oil pressure circuit actuates solenoid valves in response to the shifting output signal and the lockup ON/OFF output signal of the control unit. The solenoid valves, in turn, control engagement and release of frictional engagement elements to achieve the decided gear stage and control engagement and release of the lockup clutch. The control unit includes, stored in memory, a lockup diagram set with an ON/OFF hysteresis area; a comparator for deciding whether or not the vehicle speed and the throttle opening, at the time of a shifting output signal is produced, are within the ON/OFF hysteresis area of the lockup diagram; and a lockup output signal generator for turning the lockup output ON if the vehicle speed and the throttle opening are within the ON/OFF hysteresis area when the shifting output signal is produced.

A hydraulic control for an automatic transmission is composed of a gear shift mechanism having first and second frictional engagement elements, a hydraulic control unit for the engagement elements, and an electronic control unit for the hydraulic control unit. The first element is engaged to achieve a first speed stage and the second element is engaged to achieve a second speed stage faster than and closest to the first speed stage. The hydraulic control unit has a first directional control valve for switching the feeding and discharge of hydraulic pressure between the first and second engagement elements, responsive to a first solenoid signal from the electronic control unit. A second directional control valve is adapted to be switched by a second solenoid signal from the electronic control unit to achieve a third speed stage yet faster than the second speed stage. The first engagement element has a discharge line connected to a drain line via the second directional control valve. The electronic control unit has a detector for determination of tie-up of either or both of the engagement elements, whereby upon detection of tie-up by the detector, the second solenoid signal is output to the second directional control valve.

A flexible shaft coupling comprising drive side connecting elements and driven side connecting elements arranged alternately and equidistantly in an annular orientation, and coupling pieces of annular form linking mutually adjacent pairs of drive side connecting elements and driven side connecting elements, each of both connecting elements being formed of an inner sleeve, an outer sleeve and an elastic intermediate member bonding them, the coupling pieces being formed of a belt strip wrapping around the outer sleeve and an elastomeric body surrounding and covering the wrapped belt strip. The elastic intermediate member is formed as a rubber bushing press-fitted between the inner and outer sleeves and extends only in an axially middle portion of both sleeves, and adjacent to the rubber bushing, intermediate sleeves are fitted to the inner sleeve or outer sleeve. The elastic intermediate member has a compressive strain of 25-40%. Upon normal loading, the elastic intermediate member causes elastic deformation to conduct torque transmission and consequently, low torsional rigidity and low inclination rigidity are retained and run-out of drive shaft and driven shaft is minimized. Upon high loading, torque transmission is performed by the intermediate sleeve, inner sleeve and outer sleeve unitedly being in contact with one another with no vibrations and no noises.

Upon downshifting, one of first and second frictional engagement devices is released while the other is engaged. A directional control valve is provided to feed or drain servo hydraulic pressure to selectively engage or release the first and second devices. The hydraulic pressure is regulated by a pressure regulator under the control of an electronic control unit. Detectors are also provided to determine input rotation and torque, respectively. The regulator is interposed between the directional control valve and the engaged device. The regulator is controlled to maintain the servo hydraulic pressure at a predetermined value under the control of the electronic control unit until predetermined input rotation is detected and then to gradually raise the servo hydraulic pressure under the control of the electronic control on the basis of the value of input torque.
