The exhaust gas purification apparatus arranged with an oxidation catalyst (DOC) comprising a noble metal component for oxidizing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, in particular, nitrogen monoxide among nitrogen oxides, and for combusting light oil, a catalyzed soot filter (CSF) including a noble metal component for collecting a particulate component such as soot and removing by combustion (oxidation). The oxidation catalyst (DOC) has a catalyst layer where platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd) and barium oxide (BaO) are supported on alumina (Al2O3) having a pore size of 12 to 120 nm, and ratio of platinum and palladium is 1:1 to 11:2 in weight equivalent.

The post-processing system includes: an LNT catalyst configured to adsorb nitrogen oxide (NOx) under lean atmosphere and desorb the nitrogen oxide (NOx) under rich atmosphere, based on a window of theoretical air-fuel ratio; and a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The DPF includes a first purifier disposed at a back end of the LNT catalyst and purifying hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO), and a second purifier disposed at a back end of the first purifier and purifying hydrogen sulfide (H2S).

It is an object to provide an exhaust gas purification catalyst for a lean burn engine having sufficient NOx purification performance.The exhaust gas purification catalyst for a lean burn engine according to the present invention has a catalyst component including noble metal and ceria supported on a three-dimensional structure. In the whole catalyst, the supported amount of ceria per 1 L of catalyst is 140 to 300 g/L, and in the whole catalyst, is 50 to 98% by mass with respect to the whole coated amount. Furthermore, it is characterized that 50% by mass or more of ceria is included in the same catalyst layer in which noble metal is included, and the amount of noble metal included in the catalyst layer is 0.1% by mass or more with respect to the amount of ceria included in the catalyst layer.

A NOx trap, and its use in an exhaust system for internal combustion engines, is disclosed. The NOx trap comprises a substrate and three layers on the substrate. The first layer comprises a first platinum group metal, a first NOx storage component, and a first support; the second layer comprises a second platinum group metal, a second NOx storage component, and a second support; and the third layer comprises rhodium and a third support. The platinum group metal loading in the first layer is from 1 to 40 percent of the platinum group metal loading in the second layer. In addition, the first NOx storage component and the second NOx storage component are the same, and the first support and the second support are the same. The NOx trap is less prone to deactivation over numerous desulfation/NOx trap regeneration cycles.
