Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods of manufacturing optical engines and laser projectors that are well-suited for use in wearable heads-up displays (WHUDs) are described. Generally, the optical engines of the present disclosure integrate a plurality of laser diodes (e.g., 3 laser diodes, 4 laser diodes) within a single, hermetically or partially hermetically sealed, encapsulated package. Photonic integrated circuits having grating or edge couplers thereon may be used to wavelength multiplex beams of light emitted by the plurality of laser diodes into a coaxially superimposed aggregate beam. A waveguide medium having one or more directly written waveguides may couple light from laser diodes to a photonic integrated circuit, and may optionally hermetically or partially hermetically seal the laser diodes, eliminating the need for a separate seal. Such optical engines may have advantages over existing designs including, for example, smaller volumes, better manufacturability, faster modulation speed, etc. WHUDs that employ such optical engines and laser projectors are also described.

Abstract: A display apparatus is provided. The display apparatus is a retinal scanning type display apparatus, and includes a low output laser whose operational current is less than that of a standard output laser; a shunting element that is connected in parallel with the low output laser; and a drive circuit that supplies a current to the low output laser and the shunting element. The drive circuit is a drive circuit for the standard output laser capable of adjusting a current value on a discrete basis in a range of an operational current that is higher than the operational current of the low output laser.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for focusing laser projectors are described. A laser projector includes N≥1 laser diodes, each of which emits laser light having a divergence. Each laser diode is paired with a respective primary or collimation lens to at least reduce a divergence of the laser light that the laser diode produces. Downstream from the primary lens(es) in the optical path(s) of the laser light, a single dedicated secondary or convergence lens converges the laser light to a focus. By initiating the convergence of the laser light at the secondary or convergence lens as opposed to at the primary or collimation lens(es), numerous benefits that are particularly advantageous in laser projection-based wearable heads-up displays are realized.

Abstract: An optical module includes a transmitting member. The transmitting member is fixed to a cap member so as to cover a through-hole. Abstract: To prevent effectively the flickering of an image due to the switching of a polarization direction while reducing speckle noise. A polarization switching unit is provided in an optical path of laser light to a projection surface A and periodically switches a polarization direction of the laser light emitted therefrom between p and S polarization. A laser control unit controls laser light sources in synchronization with the switching by the polarization switching unit and determines a driving current corresponding to a grayscale to be displayed on the basis of driving current characteristics for P polarization when the polarization direction of the laser light is the P polarization. In addition, the laser control unit determines the driving current corresponding to the grayscale to be displayed on the basis of the driving current characteristics for P polarization when the polarization direction of the laser light is the S polarization.
