In an automatic transmission gear system which selectively actuates a plurality of frictional elements by oil pressure such as clutches and brakes that are provided in the transmission gear system in order to obtain different gear ratios, one frictional element is disengaged concurrently with engaging of another frictional element for switching the gear ratio (speed change). At that time, it is important to adjust the timing for actuating the frictional elements depending on the conditions of the engine and the vehicle itself. The present invention relates to a control device for an automatic transmission gear system which assures smooth gear shifting at all times by adequately controlling the overlap of the torque capacities of the frictional elements.

A control mechanism for an electronically controlled power shift transmission is disclosed wherein the shift pattern for the control mechanism includes an upshift and downshift path of movement for each of the forward, neutral, and reverse positions through which the control lever is movable. The control lever is biased toward a no-shift sub-position for each position of movement of the lever. A latching mechanism engageable when the control lever is in the neutral position does not restrict movement of the lever between the upshift and downshift subpositions.

These, which previously transmitted power through the transmission, are connected with a pair of drive shafts such as opposed drive axles (17 and 18) that rotate with the transmission under drive power. Differentiation between the shafts transmits through the transmission via variable speed ratios that control the moment arms, mechanical advantages, and torque bias ratios. This arrangement allows the torque to be distributed according to sensed vehicle conditions. It can apply more torque to a wheel retaining traction when its opposite wheel slips, and it can apply a larger portion of the torque to wheels bearing more weight or to a faster rotating wheel on an outside of a curve.

A memory has a stored opening degree signal. A detected opening degree signal detected by the sensor is compared with an opening degree signal stored in the memory. A control device for a hydraulic pressure operated friction clutch in an automatic speed changer has a device which detects a speed difference (S) between an engine drive shaft and an input shaft. Load and speed detecting devices detect the engine load and drive shaft speed respectively, this load and speed information being used to set a second speed difference (So). A hydraulic pressure controlling device then controls the hydraulic pressure supplied to the friction clutch control device so that the first speed difference (S) approaches the second speed difference (So). In addition, a fail-safe circuit releases the friction clutch if the first speed difference remains abnormally large for a predetermined period of time.
