A method of producing metal oxide nanoparticles in an exfoliated silicate framework by forming an aqueous exfoliated silicate suspension by mixing a layered clay into water until clear. To which is added an acidic hydrated metal species precursor solution, formed by dissolving one or more transitional metal salts, and a non-ionic surfactant. This solution is then aged to precipitate a product precursor before the product precursor is separated and washed. The product precursor is calcined to form metal oxide nanoparticles in an exfoliated silicate framework.

A method for synthesizing high quality crystalline anatase titanium dioxide having a substantial occurrence of (001) facets. Including the steps of combining a source of fluoride anions with a titanium precursor and subjecting the mixture to hydrolysis. A solvent can be combined with the source of fluoride anions and the titanium precursor prior to hydrolysis. The crystalline anatase titanium dioxide can be produced to have the highly reactive (001) facets predominant by area in a variety of crystal structures, such as nanosheets.

Apparatus for production of carbon nanotubes comprises a vacuum chamber, electrodes and a power supply to form an arc between the electrodes together with a conduit that extends into the vacuum chamber from the outside and enables graphite powder to be introduced directly into the arc formed between the electrodes. A feeder is provided to feed an anode into the chamber. In one embodiment, the electrodes include a plurality of anodes arranged in an array. The cathode is arranged to be rotatable with a trimmer to remove debris from the cathode surface. Methods of production of nanotubes using the apparatus are also provided.
