Overmolded lenses and certain fabrication techniques are described for LED structures. In one embodiment, thin YAG phosphor plates are formed and affixed over blue LEDs mounted on a submount wafer. A clear lens is then molded over each LED structure during a single molding process. The LEDs are then separated from the wafer. The molded lens may include red phosphor to generate a warmer white light. In another embodiment, the phosphor plates are first temporarily mounted on a backplate, and a lens containing a red phosphor is molded over the phosphor plates. The plates with overmolded lenses are removed from the backplate and affixed to the top of an energizing LED. A clear lens is then molded over each LED structure. The shape of the molded phosphor-loaded lenses may be designed to improve the color vs. angle uniformity. Multiple dies may be encapsulated by a single lens. In another embodiment, a prefabricated collimating lens is glued to the flat top of an overmolded lens.

The invention describes new compounds as pharmaceutical active ingredients, which have in vitro a higher affinity to estrogen receptor preparations from rat prostates than to estrogen receptor preparations from rat uteri and in vivo a preferential action on bone rather than the uterus, their production, their therapeutic use and pharmaceutical dispensing forms that contain the new compounds. The new compounds are 16α- and 16β-hydroxy-estra-1,3,5(10)-estratrienes, which carry additional substituents on the steroid skeleton and can have one or more additional double bonds in the B-, C- and/or D-rings.

A material such as a phosphor is optically coupled to a semiconductor structure including a light emitting region disposed between an n-type region and a p-type region, in order to efficiently extract light from the light emitting region into the phosphor. The phosphor may be phosphor grains in direct contact with a surface of the semiconductor structure, or a ceramic phosphor bonded to the semiconductor structure, or to a thin nucleation structure on which the semiconductor structure may be grown. The phosphor is preferably highly absorbent and highly efficient. When the semiconductor structure emits light into such a highly efficient, highly absorbent phosphor, the phosphor may efficiently extract light from the structure, reducing the optical losses present in prior art devices.

A semiconductor light emitting device is provided with a separately fabricated wavelength converting element. The wavelength converting element, of e.g., phosphor and glass, is produced in a sheet that is separated into individual wavelength converting elements, which are bonded to light emitting devices. The wavelength converting elements may be grouped and stored according to their wavelength converting properties. The wavelength converting elements may be selectively matched with a semiconductor light emitting device, to produce a desired mixture of primary and secondary light.

A gas discharge lamp is disclosed for DC operation which has a double electrode arrangement and a discharge-tight cross connection between electrode spaces. Discharge spaces for the electrodes are provided within a glass envelope. An electrode member in the envelope includes an electrical insulating disk with a central continuous interior bore having two electrodes therein and one or two side bores formed from a periphery of the disk to the interior bore. The side bores accommodate pumping connecting pieces and input lines connected to the electrodes. The interior bore is subdivided by a gas-permeable discharge-tight diaphragm positioned between the two electrodes. Exterior surfaces of the disk are provided with glass solder for joining with face surfaces of the envelope.

A backlight for a color LCD includes white light LEDs formed using a blue LED die with a layer of red and green phosphors over it. The attenuation by the LCD layers of the blue light component of the white light is typically greater as the blue wavelength becomes shorter. In order to achieve a uniform blue color component across the surface of an LCD screen and achieve uniform light output from one LCD to another, the blue light leakage of the phosphor layer is tailored to the dominant or peak wavelength of the blue LED die. Therefore, the white points of the various white light LEDs in a backlight should not match when blue LED dies having different dominant or peak wavelengths are used in the backlight. The different leakage amounts through the tailored phosphor layers offset the attenuation vs. wavelength of the LCD layers.
