The acid or nitrile reactant usually contains three to about forty carbons. Products made from halomethyl alkyl-substituted phenols and .alpha.,.beta.-olefinic diacid derivatives such as maleic anhydride are particularly useful. Similarly useful products can be made from these condensation products by further reacting their acid, acid derivative or nitrile groups with alcohols, polyols, monoamines, polyamines, metal salts or metals.

This invention relates to compositions which are useful as additives in lubricants and fuels, and more particularly, to additives which are chlorine-free or contain only minor amounts of chlorine. More particularly, carboxylic compositions are described which are prepared by reacting a terpolymer derived from a mixture of monomers comprising ethylene, an alpha-olefin containing 3 to about 20 carbon atoms, and a non-conjugated polyene with an alpha,beta-monounsaturated dicarboxylic acid or reactive derivative thereof. These carboxylic compositions may be used in lubricating oil or fuel compositions or may be used to form carboxylic derivative compositions which are useful in lubricating oil and fuel compositions. Such useful carboxylic derivative compositions can be prepared by reacting at least one of the above-described carboxylic compositions with a reactant selected from the group consisting of (A) amines characterized by the presence within their structure of at least one H--N

This invention provides an oil additive composition which may be used as an additive for both diesel engine lubricants and transmission lubricants. Additives useful in diesel engine lubricants often do not meet the requirements of specific transmission lubricant specifications. Surprisingly, the inventive composition, which comprises a combination of a neutral or basic alkali metal salt of a phenol sulfurized using elemental sulfur, a metal salt of a dithiophosphoric acid, an ashless dispersant, a calcium or magnesium sulfonate detergent, and a manganese carboxylate, may be used to create lubricants for both engine and transmission use.
