A process of making thermoelectric coolers by direct printing of n- and p-type semiconductor materials suitable for making thermoelectric coolers is disclosed. Micro Jet Printing of arrays on n and p-type materials belong to conductive site pads on non-conductive substrate and crystalization of these materials in the preferred direction as they cool produces thermoelectric cooler components without the need for sawing and machining operations. A non-conductive top substrate having conductive bonding pads is secured to the tops of the columns n and p-type semiconductor materials thereby forming an electrical and physical bond to make a thermoelectric cooler package.

This invention relates to a system for printing and dispensing chemical reagents in precisely controlled volumes onto a medium at a precisely controlled location. A jetting tube, comprising an orifice at one end and a fluid receiving aperture at the other end, is concentrically mounted within a cylindrical piezo-electric transducer. The fluid receiving aperture is connected to a reservoir containing a selected reagent by means of a filter. The reservoir may be pressurized by a regulated air supply. An electrical signal of short duration is applied to the transducer. The pulse causes the transducer and the volume defined by the jetting tube to expand, thereby drawing in a small quantity of reagent fluid. The cessation of the pulse causes the transducer and the volume of the jetting tube to de-expand, thereby causing at least a substantially uniformly sized droplet of reagent fluid to be propelled through the orifice. The droplet may be directed to impact a printing medium or collected in a dispensing recepticle.

Arrays of electro-mechanical dispensers are used to form extremely small drops of fluid and locate them precisely on substrate surfaces in miniature arrays. The printed arrays may consist of DNA, immunoassay reagents or the like. A positioning support such as an X-Y table moves the dispensing devices and substrate surfaces relative to each other to locate the drops on the substrates in predetermined patterns. Arrays of probes as dense as one thousand per square centimeter with center-to-center spacing as small as twenty-five micrometers are formed.
