An ester-containing reaction product of a carbonyl compound, preferably an acyl halide and a thiodiphenol has high temperature antioxidant properties. The reaction product is useful as a synthetic lubricant base fluid or as an antioxidant additive when used in minor amounts of 0.01 to 10 wt. % in a mineral oil or hydrocracked oil lubricant base fluid. The reaction product can also be used in a fuel.

A liquid pour point depressant composition comprises a pour point depressant which is a solid at room temperature and which has a number average molecular weight of at least 500, and a liquid medium in which the material of pour point depressant is substantially insoluble at room temperature. The pour point depressant component is dispersed in the liquid medium.

The pour point of paraffin-containing liquids is reduced by adding to the liquid an effective amount of a pour point depressant which is the reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol having a number average of greater than 30 carbon atoms in the hydrocarbyl-substituent, and an aldehyde of 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, or a source therefor. The pour point depressant is particularly useful for treating crude oils which have an initial pour point of 4.degree. C. or higher.

Alkyl ethers of sulfur-containing hydroxyl-derived aromatics have been found to be effective as high-performance synthetic lubricant base stocks with superior catalytic thermal/oxidative stabilities, excellent antiwear and load-carrying properties, as exemplified by bisphenol sulfide (BPS) based products. These ethers are also highly useful in fuel compositions.

The present invention is directed to the use of sulfur-containing alkoxylate compounds as additives in fuel compositions having a mixture of a major amount of hydrocarbons in the gasoline boiling range and a minor amount of one or more of these compounds. This invention relates to metal salts of the general formulaA.sup.y- M.sup.y+ (I)wherein M represents one or more metal ions, y is the total valence of all M and A represents one or more anion containing groups having a total of about y individual anionic moieties and each antion containing group is a group of the formula ##STR1## wherein each group in (II) is as described in the specification. These salts find utility in lubricants and fuels other than 2-cycle engine lubricants and fuels.
