    摘要： An apparatus for activating a cellular telephone within a cellular telecommunications network. A PCMCIA card interacts with a controller to display required programming information and questions. A user of the cellular telephone inputs responses to questions on a display. The user responses are transmitted to a system administrator at a customer activation center via a mobile telephone switching office in the cellular telecommunications network. The system administrator provides any necessary information for activating the cellular telephone. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a personal computer is connected to cellular telephone and the PCMCIA card is connected to the personal computer. Information for the user may be shown on either the display of the cellular telephone or on a display of the personal computer. The user may input information and responses to questions via a user input device provided as part of the display or as part of the personal computer. User input is provided to the cellular telephone to activate and program the cellular telephone for operation on the cellular telecommunications network.

    摘要： Calls to geographically limited toll-free telephone numbers, when originated from outside the predefined geographic region, are completed, but not at the called party's expense, by a) indicating to the caller that the telephone call, which otherwise will be blocked, will be completed on his behalf if the caller provides for payment of the cost of the call and b) completing the call if a signal is received from the caller indicating that the caller agrees to pay the cost of the call. Advantageously, the caller is not automatically charged for what he believed would be a free telephone call. The caller may pay for the call by charging it to any conventionally available account for charging telephone calls to which the caller is authorized to charge charges. If the account associated with the caller's telephone is selected by the caller for charging the call, a further test is made to determine if the ability to charge the cost of such geographically-limited toll-free calls to the account has been blocked. If the ability to charge the cost of such calls to the account has been blocked, the caller is offered the option of selecting a different method of payment for the call. Alternatively, the direct dial telephone number to which the 800-type telephone number translates may be announced to the caller, so that he may dial it directly himself on a subsequent call.

The apparatus consists of an acoustic coupler and associated electronics to provide acoustic coupling to a telephone handset and to connect to a direct connect modem or other data device to allow operation of the direct connect modem in most modes as if directly connected to a telephone line. The device disclosed includes circuitry for off-hook detection for automatically turning on the electronics, so that battery power is only active when required.     摘要： A telecommunications system is disclosed which is user programmable permitting inter and intrapremises communications from existent two-wire telephone extension sets at a customer's premises. The system may be functionally described as a telephone call interceptor comprising a number of building blocks for providing a plurality of features which the existent telephone extension sets may not be capable of by themselves. A data processor (110) receives data input from an incoming ringing signal detector (140), a telephone signal receiver (115), a dial tone detector (160) or from an associated user-activatable data input device (117). Responsive to the data input, the data processor provides output through a speech processor (150), a telephone signal generator (116), a ring generator (119) or through an associated data output device (113) such as a loudspeaker. A peripheral device interface (114) connects data processor (110) to security, utility meter, fire detection, energy control, appliance and other devices.

The complex is connected to a telephone network via a host toll switching center. Customers dialing over the network using a keyset can selectively establish audio-only, data-only and combined audio/data conferences. Announcements from the data store prompt the customer in the use of the arrangement and request the user to reenter information when the customer makes an error. Should the customer make too many errors, an operator is summoned.

    摘要： A voice message from a user telephone (11) is recorded (FIG. 3) by being converted to digitally coded form and processed through a computer memory (32) prior to placement in bulk storage (31) memory sectors of uniform size. The message is retrieved in a playback operation (FIG. 4). Signal energy estimates for respective memory-sector-sized parts of the message are computed, stored, and used for various purposes including message playback speed control. User-originated command data messages to the computer cause editing of the message in accordance with the commands. To effect editing, the user directs the establishment of one or more pointers at selectable silent-sector points in the message, orders the computer to display the pointer relative positions, and orders a selectable editing operation with reference to at least one of the displayed pointers.
