Abstract: Systems and methods for producing electromagnetic devices are provided. The systems and methods allow for an electromagnetic device having both a substrate (e.g., polymer) and conductive material (e.g., metal) to be manufactured without using masks or other outside objects disposed over a surface (e.g., the substrate) onto which the conductive material is deposited. In one exemplary embodiment, the method includes performing additive manufacturing using a polymer to produce a device having a plurality of interconnected walls and a plurality of frequency selective surface elements, and then coating portions of the device with a conductive material. A plurality of shadowing features are formed as part of one or more of the walls to protect the frequency selective surface elements from being coated by the conductive material. Other methods, and a variety of systems that can result from the disclosed methods, are also provided.

Abstract: In a method of manufacturing a one-dimensionally varying optical filter, a substrate is coated to form a stack of layers of two or more different types. The coating may, for example, employ sputtering, electron-beam evaporation, or thermal evaporation. During the coating, the time-averaged deposition rate is varied along an optical gradient direction by generating reciprocation between a shadow mask and the substrate in a reciprocation direction that is transverse to the optical gradient direction. In some approaches, the shadow mask is periodic with a mask period defined along the direction of reciprocation, and the generated reciprocation has a stroke equal to or greater than the mask period along the direction of reciprocation. The substrate and the shadow mask may also be rotated together as a unit during the coating. Also disclosed are one-dimensionally varying optical filters, such as linear variable filters, made by such methods.

Abstract: Method for making an eyeglass lens coated by means of physical vapor deposition PVD, such method comprising a step of arranging a lens blank, provided with a first centering reference, a step of arranging a support body, provided with a first shaped and through opening oriented with respect to a second centering reference thereof, and a step of arranging a centering template. The present method then comprises an assembly step of the lens blank with the support body and of the support body with the centering template. Subsequently, the present method comprises a step of coating the lens blank by means of physical vapor deposition PVD, and finally comprises a cutting step in which the lens blank is cut along a cutting profile shaped in eyeglass lens form and oriented with respect to the first centering reference.

Abstract: This disclosure is directed to an improved process for making glass articles having optical coating and easy-to clean coating thereon, an apparatus for the process and a product made using the process. In particular, the disclosure is directed to a process in which the application of the optical coating and the easy-to-clean coating can be sequentially applied using a single apparatus. Using the combination of the coating apparatus and the substrate carrier described herein results in a glass article having both optical and easy-to-clean coating that have improved scratch resistance durability and optical performance, and in addition the resulting articles are “shadow free.”

Abstract: Methods of depositing materials to provide for efficient coupling of light from a first device to a second device are disclosed. In general, these methods include mounting one or more wafers on a rotating table that is continuously rotated under one or more source targets. A process gas can be provided and one or more of the source targets powered while the wafers are biased to deposit optical dielectric films on the one or more wafers. In some embodiments, a shadow mask can be laterally translated across the one or more wafers during deposition. In some embodiments, deposited films can have lateral and/or horizontal variation in index of refraction and/or lateral variation in thickness.

Abstract: To prevent a height difference from being produced between a metal sheath and a paint layer formed on a vane surface of a vane body. A coating apparatus includes a jig adapted to support a guide vane equipped with a metal sheath for covering a leading edge portion; a nozzle adapted to spray paint onto a vane body; a robot adapted to move the nozzle; and a control unit adapted to control a spraying operation of the nozzle and robot. The jig includes a movable covering body adapted to separably cover the metal sheath and cover an exposed portion of adhesive between a lateral edge portion of the metal sheath and the vane surface of the vane body, and a covering body drive unit adapted to move the movable covering body between a state in which the movable covering body covers the metal sheath and a state in which the movable covering body is separated from the metal sheath while covering the metal sheath. The control unit performs control to make transition from a sheath cladding coating mode to a finish coating mode.
