The present invention relates to a process for the production of a shell catalyst which comprises a catalyst support shaped body with an outer shell in which metallic Pd and/or Au is contained. In order to provide a process by means of which shell catalysts can be obtained, in the outer shell of which relatively high metallic Pd and/or Au contents are contained, a process is proposed comprising the steps of a) providing a porous catalyst support shaped body; b) providing a first solution in which a Pd and/or an Au precursor compound is contained; c) providing a second solution in which a Pd and/or a Au precursor compound is contained, wherein the first solution brings about a precipitation of the noble-metal component(s) of the second solution and the second solution a precipitation of the noble-metal component(s) of the first solution; d) loading the catalyst support shaped body with the first and with the second solution; e) converting the noble-metal component(s) precipitated on the catalyst support body into the metal form.

To provide a shell catalyst with a relatively small shell thickness, a device is set up to circulate the catalyst support shaped bodies by means of process gases with a reductive effect. The device is charged with catalyst support shaped bodies that are circulated by means of a process gas with a reductive effect, an outer shell of the catalyst support shaped bodies is impregnated with a transition-metal precursor compound by spraying the circulating catalyst support shaped bodies with a solution containing the transition-metal precursor compound, the metal component of the transition-metal precursor compound is converted into the metal form by reduction by means of the process gas, and the catalyst support shaped bodies sprayed with the solution are dried.

The invention is directed toward methods of using alkali-containing catalysts for generation of hydrogen-rich gas at temperatures of less than about 260° C. A WGS catalyst of the invention may have the following composition: a) at least one of Pt, Ru, their oxides and mixtures thereof; b) Na, its oxides or mixtures thereof; and optionally, c) Li, its oxides and mixtures thereof. The catalysts may be supported on a variety of catalyst support materials. The invention is also directed toward catalysts that exhibit both high activity and selectivity to hydrogen generation and carbon monoxide oxidation.

A method and catalysts for producing a hydrogen-rich syngas are disclosed. According to the method a CO-containing gas contacts a water gas shift (WGS) catalyst, in the presence of water, preferably at a temperature of less than about 450° C. to produce a hydrogen-rich syngas. Also disclosed is a water gas shift catalyst formulated from:a) Pt, its oxides or mixtures thereof,b) at least one of Fe and Rh, their oxides and mixtures thereof, andc) at least one member selected from the group consisting of Sc, Y, Ti, Zr, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, Re, Co, Ni, Pd, Ge, Sn, Sb, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, and Eu, their oxides and mixtures thereof. The WGS catalyst may be supported on a carrier, such as any one member or a combination of alumina, zirconia, titania, ceria, magnesia, lanthania, niobia, yttria and iron oxide. Fuel processors containing such water gas shift catalysts are also disclosed.

The invention relates to a supported catalyst and the production and use thereof in the synthesis of vinyl acetate in the gaseous phase from ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen, or from gases containing oxygen, whereby the activity and selectivity are simultaneously improved. The catalyst contains palladium, at least one alkali metal compound and optionally one or more catalyst accelerators, in particular, gold, barium and/or cadmium on a porous support. Said support contains at least one reducible metal oxide, in particular oxides of the elements of groups IIIb, IVb, Vb, VIb from the periodic table of elements. Once the support has been loaded with at least one palladium compound, a reduction is carried out at a temperature of >200° C.
