摘要: Optical methods, devices, and systems for noninvasively detecting transient surface displacements in a neuron are disclosed. Methods, devices, and systems provided may employ a phase-sensitive optical low coherence reflectometer. In addition, surface displacements due to action potential propagation in neural tissues may be detected in some embodiments using back-reflected light. According to some embodiments, exogenous chemicals or reflect ion coatings are not required. Transient neural surface displacement of less then 1 nm in amplitude and 1 ms in duration may be detected and may be generally coincident with action potential arrival to the optical measurement site. The systems and methods may be used for noninvasive detection of various neuropathies such as retinal neuropathies. They may also be useful in detecting the effects of various pharmacological agents.

摘要: An apparatus for monitoring the activity of a surgeon. At least one wireless sensing unit is provided for monitoring potential damage to a nerve and is located at a first location of a body being operated on by a surgeon. The wireless sensing unit senses a change in the body at the first location resulting from potential damage to the nerve occurring at a second location of the body remote from the first location. The wireless sensing unit produces a wireless sensed change output signal indicative of the change in the body which is received by a receiver and generates a corresponding received output signal. An analyzer unit receives and analyzes the received output signal to determine the change in the body. An indicator responsive to the output of said analyzer unit indicates the change in the body to indicate the potential damage to the nerve the surgeon.

摘要: A method of diagnosing, and determining the position of a microscopic or a macroscopic soft tissue injury or soft tissue stress fracture in a patient. The method includes the steps of determining a pain area on the skin of the patient, applying electromagnetic energy or radiation in a selected portion or range of the visible or infrared spectrums, to parts of the body's surface that correspond with the pain area, obtaining feedback from the patient to determine the sensations that the patient experiences as a result of visible or infrared energy being applied to the tissue at a specific region of pain area, and establishing the site of the microscopic or macroscopic soft tissue injury at the specific region where the sensations are greatest. The visible or infrared energy can be applied using a laser probe. The probe can operated at a selected wavelength or a set of wavelengths in the range of 400 nm to 10,000 ran. The soft tissue injuries to which the present invention may be applicable include injuries that result in symptoms including lower back pain, neck pain, migraines, Type 2 diabetes, sciatica, tinnitus, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic pain syndrome and fibromyalgia.

摘要: An electromagnetic pedicle awl utilizes a tightly focused time-varying magnetic flux to create a localized electromotive force (EMF) near the tip. The localized EMF creates localized eddy currents in nearby nerves which excite ionic nerve channels, the excitation being detected by an electromyographic recording device. The awl only excites nerves directly in front of and directly to the side of the tip. The awl is comprised of a tapered awl or drill tip in combination with a solid core surrounded by a solenoid. A pulsed electric current source drives the solenoid to create a time-varying magnetic field in the vicinity of the tapered tip. The awl or drill tip may be stationary with respect to the solenoid or it may rotate. The awl in combination with an EMG detector connected to a patient is sensitive to the pedicle hole position with respect to adjacent nerves and reduces false placement failure.

摘要: A method includes evoking and recording the response of a trigeminal reflex in the presence and absence of occipital nerve stimulation (ONS) to determine whether, and to what extent, ONS modulates the trigeminal reflex. If the ONS modulates the trigeminal reflex, e.g. to a sufficient degree, the subject may be considered a candidate for ONS for treatment of headache.
