Systems and methods are provided for capturing CO2 from a combustion source using molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs). The fuel cells are operated to have a reduced anode fuel utilization. Optionally, at least a portion of the anode exhaust is recycled for use as a fuel for the combustion source. Optionally, a second portion of the anode exhaust is recycled for use as part of an anode input stream. This can allow for a reduction in the amount of fuel cell area required for separating CO2 from the combustion source exhaust and/or modifications in how the fuel cells are operated.

A process for converting carbonaceous materials or light hydrocarbon gases into products comprising predominately C5+ hydrocarbons. The process converts the feedstock into synthesis gas comprising hydrogen and carbon monoxide and then uses the Fischer-Tropsch reaction to produce heavy hydrocarbons. A small excess of hydrogen is produced in the syngas generator or by water gas shift for use in product upgrading and for blending with Fischer-Tropsch tail gas for recycle back to syngas generation. A portion of the Fischer-Tropsch tail gas is used as fuel, thus purging combustible light gases and CO2 from the tail gas. Hydrogen rich purge gas is blended into the remaining tail gas resulting in a recycle stream that is returned to the syngas generator. The tail gas components are therefore efficiently used to produce more products.

A synthesis gas conversion process and system are disclosed. Fresh syngas from a methane reformer is used as a sweep zone gas feed which is caused to flow across a water permselective membrane in a membrane reactor. The water permselective membrane is adjacent a synthesis gas conversion reaction zone in which synthesis gas is contacted with a catalyst and converted to effluent including water. Water is removed from the reaction zone through the membrane and passes out of the reactor with the sweep zone gas. The water is then removed from the sweep zone gas forming a modified gas feed which is fed to the reaction zone. The modified gas feed has a preferred H2/CO ratio to feed into the reaction zone.
