The present invention relates to poly &agr;-olefins (PAO's) which exhibit superior Noack volatility at low pour points. Mixtures of 1-decene and 1-dodecene are polymerized using an alcohol promoted BF3 in conjunction with a combination of cocatalysts. The reaction mixture is distilled to remove the unreacted monomeric and dimeric species. The resulting product is then hydrogenated to saturate the oliogomers to provide a hydrogenated product which has a viscosity of 5 cSt. This product is distilled to provide PAO's of varying viscosity grades. The 4 cSt PAO is comprised mostly of trimers and tetramers while the 6 cSt product is comprised of trimers, tetramers, and pentamers.

Systems and methods are provided for block operation during lubricant and/or fuels production from deasphalted oil. During “block” operation, a deasphalted oil and/or the hydroprocessed effluent from an initial processing stage can be split into a plurality of fractions. The fractions can correspond, for example, to feed fractions suitable for forming a light neutral fraction, a heavy neutral fraction, and a bright stock fraction, or the plurality of fractions can correspond to any other convenient split into separate fractions. The plurality of separate fractions can then be processed separately in the process train (or in the sweet portion of the process train) for forming fuels and/or lubricant base stocks. The separate processing can allow for selection of conditions for forming lubricant fractions, such as bright stock fractions, that have a cloud point that is lower than the pour point.

A method of screening a hydrocarbon stream for potential toxicological hazards. The method involves providing a hydrocarbon stream; conducting 2-dimensional gas chromatography (2D-GC) analysis to quantify saturates and aromatic distribution in the hydrocarbon stream; identifying 2-8 ring aromatic distribution and weight percentage of 2-8 ring aromatic molecules in the hydrocarbon stream from the 2D-GC analysis; relating the weight percentage of 2-8 ring aromatic molecules in the hydrocarbon stream from the 2D-GC analysis to a mutagenicity index (MI), in which the MI is determined in accordance with ASTM Standard Method E 1687; and assessing a potential toxicological hazard of the hydrocarbon stream based on the weight percentage of 2-8 ring aromatic molecules in the hydrocarbon stream from the 2D-GC analysis and a MI threshold value. The 2-8 ring aromatic distribution preferably includes 3-6 ring aromatics, more preferably 3.5-5.5 ring aromatics. The 2-8 ring aromatic distribution includes mono alkylated and multi alkylated aromatic molecules.

The present invention provides a modified composite molecular sieve, and a preparation method and an application of the modified composite molecular sieve. The present invention further provides a catalyst and an application of the catalyst. The catalyst comprises a carrier and a noble metal loaded on the carrier, wherein, the carrier comprises a modified composite molecular sieve that is the modified composite molecular sieve provided in the present invention or the modified composite molecular sieve obtained with the method provided in the present invention. The catalyst that utilizes the composite molecular sieve as a carrier not only can decrease the solidifying point of waxy raw oil, but also can improve the yield of liquid product, is especially applicable to the isomerization dewaxing process of lube distillate, and has an advantage of remarkably improving the viscosity index of lube base oil.

A process is described for producing an M41S family molecular sieve. The process comprises preparing a synthesis mixture capable of forming said molecular sieve in a reactor, which is equipped with a mixer having a Froude number of at least 1, said synthesis mixture having a solids content of at least 20 wt %. The synthesis mixture is heated in the reactor while agitating the mixture with said mixer to form a product mixture comprising water and crystals of said molecular sieve material. Thereafter at least part of the water is removed from the product mixture in the reactor so as to decrease the water content of the product mixture inside the reactor by at least 5 wt %.
