Abstract: A method for performing an amplification reaction comprises the automated steps of combining a fluid sample together with one or more amplification reaction reagents in a reaction receptacle using a first automated pipettor, thereby forming a reaction mixture, transporting the reaction receptacle to a first, predetermined location of a centrifuge, subjecting the reaction mixture to centrifugation, after subjecting the reaction mixture to centrifugation, removing the reaction receptacle from a second, predetermined location of the centrifuge different from the first predetermined location and placing the reaction receptacle in a thermocycler, and in the thermocycler, subjecting the reaction mixture to one or more temperature cycles.

Abstract: Provided herein are systems, devices and methods for retaining chromatographic minicolumns in a holding fixture. A retaining apparatus may be provided with a pair of laterally spaced apart upright supports and a horizontal beam spanning between the upright supports to hold them in the laterally spaced apart relationship. The apparatus may be configured to contact a holder plate only along peripheral edges of the holder plate. The apparatus may be configured to slide along the holder plate after the minicolumns have been inserted therein, thereby retaining the minicolumns in the holder plate but allowing access to the minicolumns through vertical holes in the horizontal beam.

Abstract: A cap and a processing vial configured for interlocking engagement. The processing vial includes a locking collar surrounding an open upper end of the processing vial with lateral through holes formed through the locking collar. The vial also includes a latch hook located above each through hole. The cap includes a latch collar extending about a lower portion of the cap, where the latch collar is configured to snap in beneath the latch hooks of the processing vial when the lower portion of the cap is inserted into the open upper end of the processing vial to lock the cap to the processing vial.

Abstract: A diagnostic system performs a first nucleic acid amplification reaction and a second, different nucleic acid amplification reaction. The diagnostic system includes a compartment configured to store at least a first bulk reagent container comprising a first bulk reagent for performing a sample preparation process, and a second bulk reagent container comprising a second bulk reagent for performing the first reaction. The system including a compartment configured to store at least one unit-dose pack comprising a plurality of unit-dose reagents for performing the second reaction. The diagnostic system is configured to perform the sample preparation process using the first bulk reagent on each of a plurality of samples provided to the diagnostic system. The system is configured to perform the first reaction using the second bulk reagent on a first sample subset, and perform the second reaction using the plurality of first unit-dose reagents on a second sample subset.

Abstract: An immunodiagnostic test method includes holding a selection of immunological test elements or consumables in one or more containers attached to or positioned in the analyzer and providing random access to any test element therein. The container can hold multiple types of test elements in compartments or slots. Through sensing of a test element position in its slot, the detection mechanism of the invention provides for random access to multiple types of test elements in any sleeve and within a single sleeve, and provides efficient inventory control. The method increases the number of test element types that may be loaded onto an analyzer and maintains fast determination of inventory.

Abstract: A system for conducting the identification and quantification of micro-organisms, e.g., bacteria in urine samples which includes: 1) several disposable cartridges for holding four disposable components including a centrifuge tube, a pipette tip having a 1 ml volume, a second pipette tip having a 0.5 ml volume, and an optical cup or cuvette; 2) a sample processor for receiving the disposable cartridges and processing the urine samples including transferring the processed urine sample to the optical cups; and 3) an optical analyzer for receiving the disposable cartridges and configured to analyze the type and quantity of micro-organisms in the urine sample. The disposable cartridges with their components including the optical cups or cuvettes are used in the sample processor, and the optical cups or cuvettes containing the processed urine samples are used in the optical analyzer for identifying and quantifying the type of micro-organism existing in the processed urine samples.

Abstract: Systems and methods for processing and analyzing samples are disclosed. The system may process samples, such as biological fluids, using assay cartridges which can be processed at different processing locations. In some cases, the system can be used for PCR processing. The different processing locations may include a preparation location where samples can be prepared and an analysis location where samples can be analyzed. To assist with the preparation of samples, the system may also include a number of processing stations which may include processing lanes. During the analysis of samples, in some cases, thermal cycler modules and an appropriate optical detection system can be used to detect the presence or absence of certain nucleic acid sequences in the samples. The system can be used to accurately and rapidly process samples.
