Abstract: Multicomponent filaments, nonwoven webs made from the multicomponent filaments, and processes for forming nonwoven webs are disclosed. In accordance with the present invention, the multicomponent filaments contain a crimp enhancement additive. Specifically, the crimp enhancement additive is added to a polymeric component and increases the crystallization and/or solidification rate of that polymeric component. The use of the crimp enhancement additive in one of the polymeric components of the multicomponent filaments allows the multicomponent filaments to inherently crimp without the use of any post-crystallization/solidification heat treatment. The process produces webs with improved fabric density and softness properties. The crimp enhancement additive incorporated into the filaments is a polyolefin homopolymer, in particular a polypropylene homopolymer.

Abstract: A contaminant sorptive buoyant pad is provided to preferentially absorb or adsorb contaminants from a water body surface. The pad includes a laminar core which is formed from side-by-side stacked layers of superabsorbent meltblown polypropylene microfiber fabric, and which has a density less than water. The porosity and inter-layer spacing between adjacent stacked layers is selected to facilitate contaminate absorptive and the capillary movement and wicking of hydrocarbons and other contaminants from the water surface into the pad interior.

Abstract: In-line processes for producing scrubby substrates, and related scrubby substrate cleaning articles. The process may include melting a polymer resin material, and extruding or otherwise dispensing the molten polymer resin material through one or more orifices of a heated nozzle, into a stream of hot inert gas, which attenuates the molten resin, so that the resin forms into elongated globules (rather than fibers or filaments). Such globules may have irregular cross-section and/or irregular thickness along a length of the globules. Alternatively, the molten resin may be formed into substantially continuous or discontinuous string or chain pattern of abrasive fibers, exhibiting a high frequency, low amplitude substantially linear pattern on the base substrate. In either case the globules or abrasive fibers are collected onto at least a portion of a base substrate layer to form a scrubby substrate that is more abrasive than typical meltblown materials.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods for generating fiber constructs via electrospinning are disclosed herein. The system for generating fiber constructs includes an ejection device and a collector. The collector contains a collection surface with patterns formed by conductive trace(s). The conductive trace(s) is arranged such that the resulting electric field lines are either undisturbed electrostatic field lines or blurred electrostatic field lines aligned around each conductive trace. Methods of generating fiber constructs using the system via electrospinning includes applying an electrostatic charge to the ejection device or a component thereof. The formed fiber construct has a grammage that is at least 5% higher than a grammage of a fiber construct formed on an un-patterned collector under the same conditions. The electrospun fiber constructs may be used for forming engineered tissues or implants, wound dressings, drug delivery formulations, and implant or device coatings.
