Methods and devices for altering the power of a lens, such as an intraocular lens, are disclosed. In one method, the lens comprises a single polymer matrix containing crosslinkable pendant groups, wherein the polymer matrix increases in volume when crosslinked. The lens does not contain free monomer. Upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, crosslinking causes the exposed portion of the lens to increase in volume, causing an increase in the refractive index. In another method, the lens comprises a polymer matrix containing photobleachable chromophores. Upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation, photobleaching causes a decrease in refractive index in the exposed portion without any change in lens thickness. These methods avoid the need to wait for diffusion to occur to change the lens shape and avoid the need for a second exposure to radiation to lock in the changes to the lens.

The solution comprises one or more organic buffer agents, such as a Good buffer or a bis-aminopolyols; an organic tonicity-adjusting agent with multiple hydroxyl groups in an amount sufficient to provide an osmolarity of from about 200 to about 450 mosm/l, wherein the aqueous solution has a pH of from about 5.5 to about 8.5, provided that the aqueous solution include phosphate buffer at a concentration of about 15 mM or less and about 5000 ppm sodium chloride. The present invention also provides a method for sterilizing and storing an ophthalmic device using an aqueous solution of the invention.

The invention provides carbamate-functional resins and coating compositions incorporating said resins that have improved adhesion with respect to subsequently applied films or coatings. More particularly, the invention relates to carbamate-functional addition polymers having at least 250 grams of polymer per carbamate group which are made with less than 35 percent by weight of nonfunctional monomers, preferably with less than 20 percent by weight and most preferably from 0 to less than 10 percent by weight, based on the total weight of the polymer. The invention further provides a method of making a carbamate-functional polymer and carbamate-functional polymers made by the claimed method. Finally, the invention provides a method for improving the adhesion of a first coating composition to a subsequently applied material as well as a method of making a composite comprising a coated substrate, an adhesive composition, and a glass having at least one surface.
