    摘要: An apparatus and method for selectively attracting and inhibiting attraction of at least one predetermined molecule to a site in a molecular detection device utilizes a first electrode and a second electrode proximate to the site. The first electrode selectively generates a first electric field proximate to the site in response to a first signal applied thereto. The first electric field provides an attractive force to attract the at least one predetermined molecule toward the site. The second electrode selectively generates a second electric field proximate to the site in response to a second signal applied thereto. The second electric field selectively inhibits attraction of the at least one predetermined molecule toward the site by providing a repulsive force which dominates the attractive force provided by the first electric field.

    摘要: An optical sensor (10,30) uses a polymer light emitting diode (12, 31, 41, 51) to emit light detected by a polymer photodetector (13, 36, 46, 56). The polymer light emitting diode (12, 31, 41, 51) containing an indicator that reacts with an analyte and alters the light emitted by the polymer light emitting diode (12, 31, 41, 51). The change is detected by the polymer photodector (13, 36, 46, 56) and is used to detect the presence of the analyte.

    摘要: An optoelectronic transducer includes a fiber carrier having a groove formed in a major side with an optical fiber mounted in the groove and a reflecting surface positioned adjacent one end of the groove so as to direct light in-to/out-of the optical fiber. A photonic device carrier having a photonic device fixedly mounted on a major side. Mounting pads positioned on the major sides of the carriers are affixed together so that the photonic device is optically aligned with the reflecting surface and light traveling in-to/out-of the optical fiber is directed out-of/in-to the photonic device. The carriers are formed of materials with similar thermal coefficients of expansion, such as silicon and ceramic.

The second mirror stack can be selectively etched to the active region by utilizing the aluminum-free active region as an etch stop.

    摘要: A planar semiconductor laser having low thermal and series resistance is fabricated. The semiconductor laser has an optical waveguide and a lateral current injection path provided by a conductive region. The conductive region disorders the active region and the first 1/4 wave stack of the laser, which reduces the reflectivity, therefore allowing control of the optical waveguide independent of the current flow. By forming the conductive region, the laser of the present invention can have stable optical characteristics and a bigger emission spot due to the weak built-in waveguide, thus resulting in the formation of a device having high output and a low thermal and series resistance.
