The device further includes a source of illumination and an edge illumination layer having an input adapted to receive illumination from the source, and a terminal edge that outputs the illumination, the edge illumination layer being disposed adjacent to the support substrate. Illumination from the terminal edge of the illumination layer is directed into the optically confining region.

Methods, apparatus, and applications for use of a stacked, reconfigurable system for electrophoretic transport are provided. In one embodiment, a system having a first chamber including at least a bottom support and an intermediate support, and a second chamber, said second chamber including a bottom support and a top member, the first and second chambers being coupled through a via. Electrophoretic, and optional electro-osmotic and thermal, transport is effected. In another aspect of this invention, three or more chambers are coupled by an electrophoretic buss. The electrophoretic buss includes driving electrodes and is adapted to receive fluid containing materials for transport. The chambers are coupled to the electrophoretic buss and serve as a tap from the buss for delivery of charged materials. In one embodiment, certain functions are performed in different chambers. For example, the first chamber may receive the sample and perform sample processing functions, the second chamber may perform amplification procedures, yet a third chamber may perform hybridization or other assays, and yet another chamber may perform immunoassays. By separating various functions to different chambers, speed and sensitivity may be improved. In yet another aspect of this invention, analysis from a earlier stage may be utilized in a subsequent stage to reconfigure the system for optimum use. In one application, analysis at a first level is utilized to determine an action at a second level, such as the synthesis of a compound. The synthesized compound in response to a biohazard may comprise vaccine or antidote.

A method for manufacturing a multicomponent flip-chip device is disclosed. The device includes a chip disposed adjacent to a substrate, the substrate including a via therethrough. The device is adapted to receive a fluid to be placed on the substrate, wherein the fluid then flows through the via down to the chip. The chip includes a sealant free region and a sealant receiving region. The method includes the steps of placing a chip adjacent to a substrate. Light is exposed to the substrate and through the via, down onto the surface of the chip. A light-curable, wickable sealant is applied to the interface between the substrate and the chip, wherein the light at least partially cures the sealant to preclude the sealant from flowing to the sealant free region. Additional curing of sealant may also be performed.

The first electrode selectively generates a first electric field proximate to the site in response to a first signal applied thereto. The first electric field provides an attractive force to attract the at least one predetermined molecule toward the site. The second electrode selectively generates a second electric field proximate to the site in response to a second signal applied thereto. The second electric field selectively inhibits attraction of the at least one predetermined molecule toward the site by providing a repulsive force which dominates the attractive force provided by the first electric field.

A planar semiconductor laser having low thermal and series resistance is fabricated. The semiconductor laser has an optical waveguide and a lateral current injection path provided by a conductive region. The conductive region disorders the active region and the first 1/4 wave stack of the laser, which reduces the reflectivity, therefore allowing control of the optical waveguide independent of the current flow. By forming the conductive region, the laser of the present invention can have stable optical characteristics and a bigger emission spot due to the weak built-in waveguide, thus resulting in the formation of a device having high output and a low thermal and series resistance.
