Abstract:
A system for attachment of a device to a bone is provided. The system includes an internal axial rod with a proximal and distal end that is configured to be inserted and secured into a bone cavity's distal end. The system can also include an internal-external transfer rod with a proximal and distal end mounted into the distal end of the axial rod and a central channel extending through the transfer rod from the proximal end to the distal end and a plurality of attachment rings for attaching at least one tissue or muscle group to the transfer rod. The system also includes a bio-compatible and bio-occlusive artificial membranes (BIOCAMS) lamina, wherein the lamina includes either a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) mesh, a biocompatible polymer, a carbon fiber polymer, an artificial tissue polymer, molded donor tissue, allogenic tissue, a collagen/hyaluronic acid-based tissue, or connective tissue biosynthetic substrate material suitable as webbing.
Abstract:
A scaffold for tissue culture and cell culture and for producing implant materials, in particular bone, cartilage or skin replacements or extra-corporal organ replacements or for other applications in medicine or biotechnology is made of biocompatible materials. It has at least one base material which is electrostatically flocked with fibers on at least one side. Through the electrostatic flocking the fibers are arranged almost perpendicularly on the surface of the base material and exhibits a high fiber pull-out resistance. The scaffold provides an elastic growth lattice, which is stable against compression, for cell colonization in vitro or the ingrowth of cells in vivo. Implants or implant materials can be produced with the scaffold.

An orthopedic prothesis component comprising a joint member and an anchoring member coupled thereto, said anchoring member including a plurality of elongated rod shaped anchoring posts and a support plate having an upper surface for carrying said joint member, and a lower surface configured to abut a resected surface of the bone and being connected to said anchoring posts, each of said anchoring posts containing a plurality of anchoring collars disposed at predetermined intervals along said posts, each of said collars having radial surfaces extending beyond the perimeter of said posts, whereby said collars serve to transfer loads imposed on the anchoring posts to spongiose material that is packed around said posts after the posts are positioned in the skeleton bone cavity.
Abstract:
Disc prostheses, particularly for use in the lumbar region of the spine are provided. The disc prosthesis includes a core comprising one or more filling elements provided within an inner component of fabric. The inner component is provided within an outer component of fabric. By providing a smooth inner contact surface between the inner component and the core filling, movement between the inner and outer components is facilitated in preference to movement between the inner component and core. Core abrasion is thus avoided. The use of an inner component and an outer component also means that the characteristics of each can be optimised to meet different aims.
Abstract:
Fastening means for artificial joints including two titanium wires that are wound into a spiral and wherein the wires clamp a number of bristles between them that extend essentially radially outwards toward the interior of the bone. The bristles are a little bit too long for undisturbed insertion into the cavity of the bone and, thus they will be slightly turned backwards on insertion, thereby securing a very steady grip once inserted.

A femur head prosthesis consists of a shaft having several plate springs fixed unilaterally, which are enclosed by a thin-walled and deformable shell body. The shell body is connected to the shaft edge and seals the enclosed volume so as to be impermeable to air. The plate springs are laminated springs, which are separated by slits. The depth of the slits towards the proximal end leaves a narrow unslit yoke part. When an intermittent load occurs, a slight bending of the yoke part results and, within the yoke part, a slight displacement of the plate springs with respect to one another to result in a damping and a non-linear increase in the compressive force.

A radial head assembly is provided that includes a stem, a collar, a locking ring, and an articular member. The stem has a convex articular head on one end thereof. The locking ring has a ring wall, which has a ring opening. The ring wall has an angular outer surface and a slot configured to permit the ring wall to radially expand. The angular outer surface engages an angular portion of an interior surface of the collar. The articular member and the locking ring define an articular space within the collar. The articular space is configured to receive the convex articular head.

An intervertebral disc prosthesis including a core of elastomeric material provided within an inner component of fabric. The inner component is provided with an outer component of fabric. By providing a smooth inner contact surface between the inner component and the core, movement between the inner and outer components is facilitated in preference to movement between the inner component and core. Core abrasion is thus avoided. The use of an inner component and an outer component also means that the characteristics of each can be optimized to meet different aims. The elastomeric core is provided with an additive to enhance radiopacity under medical imaging.

An implantable bone prosthesis includes portions of two different materials which interfit with each other to form a unitary article having hard wear surface portions and strong, stiff portions for structural support. These portions are preferably formed of ceramic and of metal, respectively. The prosthesis is formed by making a multiply connected ceramic wear surface element having openings or passages therethrough, and casting the remainder of the prosthesis extending in the openings to form a mating or dendritic support or a frame interdigitated and interlocked with the ceramic wear surface. The frame may be shaped so that it contracts along a direction of shrinkage, as the casting cools, without binding against the ceramic body. In a spherical shell, such as used for the weight-bearing acetabular shell or ball joint of a hip, this is achieved with short, radially-directed interlock elements. Other connections of the two materials may include tapered bores, dovetail channels, fern-like dendritic structures, or the like. Ball and socket, trunion and other articulations are fabricated with high strength and durable wear properties.

A method of supporting an object made by stereolithography or another rapid prototype production method, in which a support is provided with at least one supporting structure which is airier than a supporting structure made of solid standing walls, including those made with notches at the top and/or at the bottom. The supporting structure can be made airy by using walls of which at least a number are provided with openings over a major part of their surface.
