Abstract: Methods and apparatuses are provided for use in monitoring product placement within a shopping facility. Some embodiments provide an apparatus configured to determine product placement conditions within a shopping facility, comprising: a transceiver configured to wirelessly receive communications; a product monitoring control circuit coupled with the transceiver; a memory coupled with the control circuit and storing computer instructions that when executed by the control circuit cause the control circuit to: obtain a composite three-dimensional (3D) scan mapping corresponding to at least a select area of the shopping facility and based on a series of 3D scan data; evaluate the 3D scan mapping to identify multiple product depth distances; and identify, from the evaluation of the 3D scan mapping, when one or more of the multiple product depth distances is greater than a predefined depth distance threshold from the reference offset distance of the product support structure.

Abstract: A cart includes a chassis configured to carry a basket and a support structure having a carrier coupled to the chassis, a pair of rear legs coupled to the carrier, and a pair of front legs coupled to the carrier, at least one of the pair of front legs and the pair of rear legs having motor driven wheels coupled thereto, at least one carrier actuator configured to move the chassis relative to the carrier, the pair of front legs including actuators which are configured to extend and retract the pair of front legs, and the pair of rear legs including actuators which are configured to extend and retract the pair of rear legs. The cart includes at least one sensor supported on the cart. The cart also includes at least one processing unit configured with software instructions that enable autonomous self-loading of the cart into a vehicle. The processing unit receives signals from the at least one sensor and providing command signals to any of the wheel motors, the at least one carrier actuator, the front leg actuators, and the rear leg actuators.

Abstract: Examples of systems and methods for locating movable objects such as carts (e.g., shopping carts) are disclosed. Such systems and methods can use dead reckoning techniques to estimate the current position of the movable object. Various techniques for improving accuracy of position estimates are disclosed, including compensation for various error sources involving the use of magnetometer and accelerometer, and using vibration analysis to derive wheel rotation rates. Various techniques utilize characteristics of the operating environment in conjunction with or in lieu of dead reckoning techniques, including characteristic of environment such as ground texture, availability of signals from radio frequency (RF) transmitters including precision fix sources. Navigation techniques can include navigation history and backtracking, motion direction detection for dual swivel casters, use of gyroscopes, determining cart weight, multi-level navigation, multi-level magnetic measurements, use of lighting signatures, use of multiple navigation systems, or hard/soft iron compensation for different cart configurations.

Abstract: A bracket assembly includes a bracket for attachment to a shopping cart and a cover connected to the bracket and covering at least part of the bracket. The bracket includes a metal plate having first and second faces, where the length is greater than the width, and the width is greater than the thickness. The bracket has a projection extending outward from the first face and a recess extending inward from the second face and corresponding to the projection. The cover has two walls and a cavity defined between the walls, and the bracket is received within the cavity such that the first and second faces each confront one of the walls. The cover further has a slot in at least one wall, such that the cover is press-fit on the bracket and the projection is received in the slot to retain the cover in connection with the bracket.

Abstract: A power generation system for wheeled objects comprises a generator mechanically coupled to one or more of the object's wheels to convert wheel rotational energy into electrical energy. The power generation system may comprise an electrical storage device configured to store the electrical power produced by the generator. Power from the generator and/or the electrical storage device can be used to provide power to other electrical systems in or on the object. In certain embodiments, the electrical storage device comprises a bank of high-capacity capacitors connected in series. Some embodiments use a control circuit, for example, to regulate the charging and discharging of the capacitor bank and to provide suitable voltages for other systems. The power generation system may be disposed within an object's wheel, such as a wheel of a shopping cart.

Abstract: A method for mitigating the loss of a cart, and a system which monitors each cart out of an inventory list of a plurality of carts. A cart may support a cart apparatus module, a cart data module, and a GPS tracker module. The system further includes a control station module and a data collection module. The control station module is coupled in communication with each data exchanger, and is configured to collect cart data via each data exchanger, store data exchanger location, and for each cart, to process and correlate time data, cart data, and stored data to derive a cart status condition, detect selected cart status conditions and recognize them as cart related event(s), and deliver a report notice in response to such event(s).
