    摘要: Additive friction stir methods for joining materials are provided. The methods comprise providing first and second substrates to be joined; providing a forming plate comprising one or more forming cavities; placing the first and second substrates in communication with the forming plate; placing the first and second substrates in communication with each other; rotating and translating an additive friction-stir tool relative to the substrates; feeding a filler material through the additive friction-stir tool; deforming the filler material and the first and second substrates; and extruding one or more of the filler material and the first and second substrates into one or more of the forming cavities of the forming plate. Interaction of the additive friction-stir tool with the substrates generates heat and plastic deformation at the joint to weld the substrates at the joint. The methods include introduction of reinforcing material at the joint through addition of the filler material.

    摘要: An end-to-end tubular joint includes first locking pieces cut from the first tube and second locking pieces cut from the second tube, where the cuts have radial cut faces on the axially aligned cuts. The first and second locking pieces are interlocked with lateral extensions of the respective locking pieces bearing against one another and the radial cut surfaces distributed circumferentially around the joint so as to constrain relative movement between the parts. The first locking pieces are welded to the first tube and the second locking pieces are welded to the second tube to form a tube joint. An alternative forms cutouts in the first tube and fits locking pieces into the cutouts that are welded to a second member, such as a second tube or cylinder that fits into the first tube so as to form the tube joint.

    摘要: An electric storage battery including a jelly roll type electrode assembly having a mandrel. The mandrel includes a positive portion, negative portion and removable portion. The mandrel has two faces with grooves dimensioned to accommodate positive and negative feedthrough pins. Electrodes are welded to the mandrel using an ultrasonic weld to the face on which the electrodes are attached. An additional weld is made to at least one ultrasonic weld using a through-mandrel laser weld, incident on the opposite face from which the ultrasonic weld. The laser melts the mandrel such that molten mandrel material fills the area under the foil at the area of the ultrasonic weld, the surface area of the foil being significantly increased by knurls formed by ultrasonic welding. Electrodes are wrapped around the mandrel using the removable portion to wind the mandrel. The mandrel allows tighter wrapping of the jelly roll assembly increasing battery miniaturization.
