A method and system for providing integrated wireline/wireless voice messaging for a subscriber having a wireline telephone and a wireless handset utilizes a wireline switch supporting the wireline telephone and a wireless switch, in communication with the wireline switch, supporting the wireless handset. A voice message unit is coupled to the wireline switch and the wireless switch for receiving a voice message from a calling party for one of the wireline telephone and the wireless handset associated with the subscriber. The voice message unit then forwards the voice message to an integrated mailbox for storage therein and transmits a notification message upon receipt of the voice message to provide indication to the subscriber at both the wireline telephone and wireless handset of the stored voice message.

A mobile identification number (MIN) is assigned in response to the area of use information. A page message is directed to the mobile station operating in its inactive state, but the page message references the mobile station's ESN. While inactive, the mobile station (28) detects pages directed to its ESN. A remote programming session is then performed wherein digital user-specific programming data, including the newly assigned MIN, are transferred to the mobile station (28) over a voice channel using a control channel protocol (80).

A corporate/organization communications system includes a number of mobile telephones and a local network which has a private automatic branch exchange (PABX) with a number of extensions. Access units are connected to the extensions. A service node, referred to as a mobility server, is connected to the PABX as an adjunct and manages all calls to and from the mobile telephones. The mobile telephones are adapted to make outgoing calls to the PABX only. The mobility server checks the services requested in a call from a mobile telephone. If the requested services match a service profile associated with the mobile telephone, the mobility server initiates the set up of the requested outgoing call. If they do not match the outgoing call is rejected. In this manner, a company or organization can control all outgoing calls from its mobile telephones. Calls directed to the mobile telephones are managed by a call park, call alert and call back sequence.

A method of providing call screening to a subscriber of personal communication services facilitates the screening of incoming calls by associating the number dialed by a calling party with a function or role of the dialed number. This function or role is then sent to the subscriber when an incoming call is received. This way, the subscriber can decide whether to answer the incoming call based upon knowing the role or context associated with the dialed number. The subscriber is also provided with user controlled features which can be invoked by the use of DTMF codes. The subscriber can place a calling party on hold prior to answering the incoming call. In addition, the subscriber can proceed with a call transfer from a wireless telephone to a wired telephone and vice-versa, while the call is still in progress. Another feature allows the subscriber to implement a real-time call screening, while the calling party is leaving a message on voice mail. Yet another feature provides a wide area virtual extension to several subscribers such that an incoming call will be simultaneously routed to each subscriber in the group, as if their telephones were extensions of each other.

A method and system for managing telephone calls includes a personal telephone manager (PTM) (12) and uses out-of-band, wireless, two-way signaling, messaging and alerting to screen, control, route and respond to incoming telephone calls and to communicate called party text messages in auditory form to the caller. Through use of an out-of-band signaling/messaging path (16), the PTM (12) frees the called party from the need to maintain telephone network connectivity, from having to inform others of his/her current location, and from having to subscribe to and use cellular telephone service. Instead, the called party can rely on the availability of existing low bandwidth, wide area, two-way wireless data services, which make efficient and cost effective use of available radio spectrum. Two-way wireless data messaging to a portable computer (18) equipped with radio transceivers is also provided. This feature enables the system to provide a set of real-time options including: call screening by the called party based on information identifying the caller's telephone number; call redirection to a wire-line or wireless telephone number as specified by the called party; call redirection to a third party or to a voice mail system; or the return of a text message specified by the called party and delivered to the caller in an auditory form.

This invention allows a subscriber of a telephone network to receive a call by a telephone registered under his/her personal telephone number no matter where he/she carries the telephone with him/her by maintaining a reference table of a personal telephone number assigned to each subscriber, a station number assigned to each telephone, and a subscriber loop address assigned to a telephone connection terminal of the network in a memory within the network. The reference table collates the station number of the telephone registered in correspondence with a personal telephone number with the subscriber loop address at which the particular telephone is being connected, and when a call for connection is made under the personal telephone number, the connection is made to the telephone by referring to the reference table, calling the loop address at which the telephone registered under the personal telephone number is currently connected, and connecting the call under control to the telephone registered under the particular personal telephone number. The station numbers are allocated to telephones respectively in the order of manufacture or distribution in accordance with a certain rule to avoid duplication.
