The application of carbon fluoride chloride in dry lubricant compositions is disclosed. The material offers a substantial improvement in lubricating properties over prior art carbon fluoride dry lubricants.The improved lubricant is comprised of carbon fluoride chloride of the general formula (C.sub.y F.sub.x Cl.sub.z).sub.n wherein y is 1 or 2, x is greater than 0 to 1.2, z is 0.1 and n defines an infinitely large two dimensional array of repeating units occurring in this molecule of high molecular weight. The resulting lubricant has improved lubricating properties over graphite, MoS.sub.2 and carbon monofluoride.

The present invention provides a composition that includes a rhenium-based alloy and a solid film lubricant. The rhenium-based alloy comprises an alloying substance including at least one constituent having a stronger affinity to oxygen than does Re when exposed to an atmosphere at a temperature of at least about 285° C.

A method for protecting and lubricating threaded connections is disclosed. The method uses an adhered anti-seize metallic film in conjunction with an environmentally friendly lubricant. The method includes the steps of: adhering to the threads, prior to make-up, then coating the protected threads with the environmentally friendly lubricating composition.

A two- or a one-step process and composition which coats metal workpiece surfaces (aluminum, copper, steel, stainless steel, etc.) with a thin lubricant film capable of allowing the metal to be deformed at room temperature. The lubricant consists essentially of polymers, dispersants, high molecular weight waxes and insoluble metallic stearates. With some ferrous surfaces, a separate coating layer is simultaneously formed (in the one-step process) or pre-formed (in the two-step process) at the metal interface, acting as a base for the lubricant. The process, after pickling in a mineral acid to remove scale and oxides, comprises the step(s) of immersing the workpiece either once or twice. The workpiece is then dried in a heated, forced air dryer.

A composition for lubricating a metal workpiece prior to cold forming consists essentially of: an aqueous alkaline stearate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication between about 180.degree. F. and about 320.degree. F.; an aqueous alkaline palmitate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication below about 160.degree. F.; an aqueous metallic stearate compound present in an amount sufficient to impart metal lubrication between about 320.degree. F. and 440.degree. F.; a polymeric glycol present in an amount sufficient to provide temperature stability, act as a carrier for the aqueous compounds, and impart a waxy lubrication to the metal; a compound present in an amount sufficient to act as a carrier for the aqueous compounds and to provide a translucent film barrier on the metal; an alkaline buffering agent present in an amount sufficient to provide dispersion, viscosity and stability; a hydrotropic agent present in an amount sufficient to solubilize the lubricating composition. A process is disclosed for lubricating a metal workpiece outer surface prior to cold forming, the process comprising the step of disposing a non-reactive lubricating composition on the workpiece outer surface, the outer surface having been alkaline cleaned, hot water rinsed, acid pickled, and cold water rinsed.

A self-lubricating solid coating that contains three layers of lubricants is disclosed. The solid lubricant may be prepared from chromium silicide or chromium carbide; disulfide and diselenide of tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, or tantalum; and silver or gold. This material combination provides superior wear and friction reduction over the temperature range applied. In this invention, chromium silicide or chromium carbide is a hard lubricant with a low wear property to protect the substrate metal; disulfide or diselenide is a soft lubricant with a very low coefficient of friction; and silver or gold with their high thermal conductivity are effective in conducting heat especially at high sliding velocities. Both silver and gold have a low friction coefficient with high oxidative stability. The use of this solid lubricant allows engine manufacturers to develop high temperature engine and partially or totally eliminate the use of liquid lubricants in engines, thus reducing the environmental pollution caused by liquid lubricants in various engines.

A dry toner composition for electrophotography includes a binder resin, a coloring agent and a mica-group mineral. The mica-group mineral provides the toner composition with lubricity and better flow capabilities. The mica-group mineral is wet-ground and may be coated with calcium stearate to reduce static electricity generated during operation of the printer, copier, or facsimile machine. The mica-group mineral and calcium stearate blend comprises ninety percent by weight or more of the mica-group mineral and ten percent by weight or less of the calcium stearate. The mica-group mineral or the mica-group mineral coated with calcium stearate makes up about zero-point-one to around fifteen percent by weight of the toner composition. The lubricant and flow agent formed by the mica-group mineral with or without the calcium stearate may be mixed into conventional dry toner as a post-additive. A mica-group mineral would be wet-ground to a very small particle size -for use in toners requiring smaller particle size and lower melting points for high speed printing operations.

A coating and bonding composition is disclosed. The composition includes suspending, bonding and thinning agents, and a metallic flake. The composition may be used with an environmentally friendly lubricating composition to form an environmentally friendly lubricating system for protecting threaded connections from galling or other damage. That system may be used in a method for protecting threaded connections that includes the steps of: coating the threads, prior to make-up, with the coating and bonding composition and then coating them with the environmentally friendly lubricating composition, after the coated threads have dried.

A low pressure die casting powdery mold releasing agent according to this invention consists of a granulated or powdery mixture of a lubricant, an organic polymer and a metal soap; wherein the lubricant is coated with the organic polymer or the metal soap. Therefore, the mold releasing agent allows productions of castings of high quality, in a squeeze casting work, with good workability and without worsening environmental situations.
