A fixed coil induction heater produces quality thermoplastic fusion welds in prefabricated resin composite parts. A susceptor along a bondline between parts aligns with the induction coil segments of a solenoid induction coil along the centerline of the coil. Energizing the coil heats the susceptor to form the weld at the bondline. For this operation, our induction heating workcell uses complementary dies that define a central cavity with an oval pattern of induction coil segments roughly conforming to the shape of the cavity and surrounding all faces of the cavity where we position the preform composite parts and susceptor.

An induction coil is passed over an interface between two resinous parts to be welded and an alternating magnetic field generated by the coil induces eddy currents in a foraminous susceptor positioned in the interface between the two parts. Pressure is applied to squeeze the two parts together while the induction heating of the susceptor raises the temperature of the resin in the faying surfaces of the two parts to the softening temperature so that resin flows through the interstices in the susceptor and bonds the two parts together. The induction heating and pressure application passes are repeated four or more times, increasing the power to the induction coil in the later passes to increase the heat input. The strength and continuity of the weld improves with each pass, although the incremental improvement diminishes after about four passes.

A laminate seal is cut, positioned and held, and welded to the dispensing orifice of a rigid plastic head after the head is molded, but before it is assembled to the tube wall. The seal is protected during the welding of the wall to the head by the use of a heat sink.

A plastic sealing ring is attached to a rim of a plastic container with an insert interposed between the rim and the sealing ring. By making the insert from a relatively rigid material, the insert can rigidify the sealing ring and hence the container. If the insert is made from an electrically conductive material, the insert can function to facilitate the induction welding of the sealing ring to the container. The sealing ring and insert can be formed as a unitary, composite sealing ring subassembly adapted for direct application to the rim of the container or they can be supplied as individual parts adapted to be applied to the rim of the container separately. In order to form the sealing ring subassembly, the sealing ring is molded from molten plastic. During the cooling of the sealing ring, the insert is positioned in a groove formed in the sealing ring. By maintaining the insert in the groove until the sealing ring completely cools, the shrinkage of the sealing ring during its cooling effectively locks the insert in the groove.

Inductors for the induction welding of complicated welding patterns have been produced up to now mostly from copper plates which were provided with slits in the desired patterns by spark-cutting and embedded into plastic material. This method of manufacture is expensive and does not allow production of inductors with a very detailed pattern because, among other things, the slits must have a minimum width determined by the spark-cutting. By making the inductors in accordance with the present invention having a thin copper foil which is applied onto the surface of an insulating material, these difficulties are overcome and the desired inductor pattern can be produced in a simple manner by etching with the help of a suitable acid. This makes possible great accuracy of detail so that detailed inductors, e.g. for the packaging industry, can be manufactured at low costs.

The edge strip projects from at least one longitudinal edge of the carrier layer such that a portion of the layer of metal foil extends from the carrier layer and a wider portion of the covering thermoplastic layer extends from the metal foil layer. A method of manufacturing the web-like laminated material having such an edge strip is also disclosed.
