摘要: A high temperature reaction apparatus and method employing radiation to heat and react on matter, such as one or more fluids containing one or more reaction materials in gaseous molecular and/or particulate form. In a preferred form, one or more high temperature plasmas as formed across one or more pairs of electrodes which define a single or a plurality of plasmas and a single or plural reaction zones. A stream or streams of fluid particles pass through such reaction zone or zones and all or select of the particles or molecules thereof are heated to a high temperature sufficient to effect a select chemical and/or physical reaction or a plurality of high temperature reactions involving a plurality of reaction products which are separated from each other downstream of the reaction zone or zones. The apparatus and a method may be used to separate select atoms from molecules of a gas or gases passed through the reaction zone or zones by breaking the bonds between the atoms of the molecules of the gas. Selected of the resulting atoms may be collected in separate streams thereof, deposited on a substrate such as a substrate in movement, to coat or carry same away from the reaction chamber or subject same to further processing such as the formation of coatings, the molding, combining of such atoms with other atoms in a further chemical process. Synthetic diamond films or particles may be so formed from carbon atoms separated from carbon atom containing molecules of a gas fed to a reaction zone defined by a plasma arc and/or microwave heating. The heat of one or more of the plasmas or microwave energy directed at the surface to be coated with synthetic diamond formed of such gas separated carbon atoms may also be employed to effect the formation of such synthetic diamond film on such surface. In other forms of the invention, the apparatus and method may be employed to heat particles of metal containing ore to separate atoms of the metal or metals of such ore from the remaining ore material and to separate select atoms of molecules of waste gas of combustion and/or chemical processes, such as atoms of carbon from oxygen of gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other hydrocarbons.

摘要: An automatic manipulator capable of performing various programs and adaptively controlled operations with respect to work including operations on work. Automatic tool changing means are provided wherein the manipulator changes tools with respect to its tool holding fixture, tool head or heads. In one form, a plurality of tools to be used are supported on a rack adjacent the manipulator and the manipulator is automatically operated to effect the uncoupling of one or more tools from its operating head and the coupling of one or more tools with respect to such operating head. In another form, the tools are supported by the manipulator itself and the manipulator is automatically controlled to effect the transfer of tools between its operating head and a storage location for the tools. In a third form, tool heads themselves are automatically changed and received either from storage on the manipulator or adjacent the manipulator. In a fourth form, the tool head is composed of a turret containing a plurality of different tools and manipulating devices, which turret is automatically operated to bring a selected tool or fixture into an operative location on the manipulator.

摘要: A method for scanning and generating image information includes generating a radiation beam and scanning an image field containing variable image information. Optical variations are detected in the image field, with electro-optical detection means to produce electrical control signals. The electrical control or detection signals are compared with information obtained from recordings in a memory. When an operable match is effected between select of the electrical detection signals and the information recorded in the memory, a coded electrical control signal is generated.

摘要: An apparatus and method for applying code recordings to objects, such as record members and the like, and reading such codes for the purposes of record keeping, identifying, pricing, routing and other functional purposes associated with information handling and the storage and retrieval of information. In one form, a select portion of a record member or recording is detected by means of an electro-optical sensor and an electronic circuit for processing and analyzing signals output by such sensor as it senses an object or recording. In a particular form, the object or record member contains a layer of recording material along one or more band-like areas on which are provided recordings to be electro-optically read.

摘要: Composite materials are in the form of particles, such as bits and short filaments, and combinations of such particles with matrix materials forming high strength, wear and corrosion resistant materials and may be shaped to define cutting tools, dies, mold components, electrodes, bearing components, finishing tools and the like. Structures include substrates and synthetic diamond particles encapsulated therein or bonded thereto have superior grinding, cutting and finishing characteristics. Particles are in the form of microbits, spheroids, single crystals, short narrow filaments and metal whiskers coated with synthetic diamond formed with a core of graphite, metal, metal compounds, metal alloys, ceramic, cermet, glass and composites thereof. Filaments and bits are coated with a lubricating film of wear resistant metal. Methods for producing such composite synthetic materials include the chemical vapor-deposition of carbon atoms from hydrocarbon gas molecules in a high intensity radiation field such as a microwave energy field.

摘要: An apparatus and method for indicating operational characteristics of a machine, such as a motor vehicle or other type of human operator or monitored machine which is subject to variations in its operational characteristics requiring adjustments, maintenance or replacement of machine parts. In particular, the system and method involve the generation of synthetic speech signals which are converted to sounds of words and phrases or sentences which describe the operational characteristics of the machine and, in certain instances, suggest remedies or procedures to be taken by an operator or maintenance personnel to prevent machine malfunction, improve its operation and, in certain instances, optimize the manner in which it performs. Both analysis of the operational characteristics or ambient conditions to which the machine is subjected are effected by a plurality of sensors of such conditions and a computer or microelectronic processor which processes the outputs of the sensors and determines such operational characteristics, further controlling the operation of an electronic synthetic speech signal generator for generating speech signals which are converted to words, phrases and, in certain instances, sentences defining the operation and further defining suggested maintenance or variations in the operation to be taken by the operator thereof. Unsafe operating conditions may be electronically detected and immediately indicated or indicated at a future time when a memory is queriead.

摘要: An apparatus and method for applying hard surface coatings to articles of manufacture such as particles, filaments, sphereoids, rollers, bearings, tools, and assemblies. In one form, coating of hard surface film, such as synthetic diamond, is effected while the objects fall freely through space in a coating chamber. In another form, coating is effected while particles are fluidized by gas containing molecules which are formed of matter to be deposited by gas or chemical vapor deposition employing high energy radiation, such as microwave energy and/or other form of radiation. In other forms, an ion beam or beams containing hot carbon ions is directed through a fluidized bed of particles to be coated or through a chamber in which small objects are made to continuously fall freely through space to coat same with carbon in the form of synthetic diamond. In another method, such small objects are caused to continuously tumble through a coating region of a coating chamber into which is directed gas and/or vapor containing molecules of a hydrocarbon, such as methane, and hydrogen, while microwave energy is directed through such region. Other forms of the invention include the selective deposition and coating of synthetic diamond onto substrates to form or protect microminiature electronic circuits and circuit elements such as transistors and interconnects and to protect bonds such as welds, or to form bonds between components joined together thereby. In yet another form, hard synthetic diamond coatings are deposited per se or in combination with other materials, by a hybrid process including chemical vapor deposition, ion deposition by beam(s), sputtering and the like.
