Abstract: An apparatus has a device representing an endoscope, the device being either an endoscope or a dummy endoscope having shape and feel resembling an endoscope, and includes a tracker adapted to operate with a three-dimensional tracking system to track location and orientation of the device in three dimensions in a simulated operating-room environment. The apparatus also has a physical head model comprising hard and soft components, the device representing an endoscope configured to be inserted into the physical head model to provide a haptic feedback of endoscopic surgery.

Abstract: A method of operating a surgical control system comprises generating an image of a surgical environment from a viewpoint of an imaging tool. The image includes a field of view. The method further comprises displaying the image on a display system configured to be mounted to a head of a user. The method further comprises detecting a movement of the head of the user and determining if the movement of the user's head is within a boundary corresponding to the field of view. The method further comprises, if the movement of the user's head is determined to be within the boundary: generating a changed image of the surgical environment from a changed viewpoint of the imaging tool; and displaying the changed image on the display system. The changed image includes a changed field of view corresponding to the detected movement of the user's head.

Abstract: A UI for a HMD system includes a HMD configured to be worn by a surgeon. A tracker is configured to track head gestures by the surgeon. A footswitch is configured to detect foot motion inputs by the surgeon. A computer couples to the HMD, the tracker, and the footswitch. A user interface includes the HMD, tracker, and footswitch. The use interface is configured to: provide to the computer the head gesture in association with the foot motion input, and display an image relating to a surgical procedure on the HMD. The computer is configured to: apply the head gesture received in association with the foot motion input to perform a first action on the HMD system when the HMD system is in a first system mode, and perform a second action on the HMD system when the HMD system is in a second system mode.

Abstract: User interface systems for sterile fields and other working environments are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a user interface system can include a projector that projects a graphical user interface onto a data board or other substrate disposed within a working environment. The system can also include a camera or other sensor that detects user interaction with the data board or substrate. Detected user interactions can be processed or interpreted by a controller that interfaces with equipment disposed outside of the working environment, thereby allowing user interaction with such equipment from within the working environment. The data board can be an inexpensive, disposable, single-use component of the system that can be easily sterilized or another component suitably prepared for use in a sterile field.

Abstract: A method performed by a surgical robotic system that includes a seat that is arranged for a user to sit and a display column that includes at least one display for displaying a three-dimensional (3D) surgical presentation. The method includes receiving an indication that the user has manually adjusted the seat and in response, determining, while the user is sitting on the seat, a position of the user's eyes, determining a configuration for the display column based on the determined position of the user's eyes, and adjusting the display column by actuating one or more actuators of the display column according to the determined configuration.

Abstract: An immersive display for use in a robotic surgical system includes a support arm, a housing mounted to the support arm and configured to engage with a face of the user, at least two eyepiece assemblies disposed in the housing and configured to provide a three-dimensional display, and at least one sensor, wherein the sensor enables operation of the robotic surgical system, and wherein the support arm is actuatable to move the housing for ergonomic positioning.

Abstract: A surgical system, method and CAD program are provided. The surgical system includes a digitization device including a pointer tip to contact a target site and actuatable control input(s). A surgical tool can manipulate the target site. A navigation system tracks a state of the digitization device. Controller(s) receive the tracked state of the digitization device and display, within a virtual reference frame, a virtual representation of the pointer tip. In response to actuation of the control input(s), the controller(s) register virtual reference points within the virtual reference frame based on the pose of the virtual representation of the pointer tip and enable arrangement of one or more geometrical design objects within the virtual reference frame relative to the registered virtual reference points to generate a virtual boundary that defines a region of the target site to be avoided by the surgical tool.
