Carboxylic esters of the formula IR.sup.1 --CO--O--R.sup.2 I,whereR.sup.1 is an aliphatic, straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon radical having alkyl side chains and a number average molecular weight of from 250 to 5000 andR.sup.2 is a straight-chain or branched hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 30 carbon atoms or a radical of the formula II ##STR1## where R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, independently of one another, are each hyrogen, branched or straight-chain alkyl, an aromatic radical or an araliphatic radical which may also contain heteroatoms,R.sup.7 and R.sup.8, independently of one another, are each branched or straight-chain alkyl or an aromatic or araliphatic radical which may also contain heteroatoms,X is O, S, NR.sup.9 or PR.sup.9, where R.sup.9 is an aliphatic or aromatic radical,n and m, independently of one another, are each from 2 to 20, andx is from 0 to 30,are used as fuel additives or lubricant additives, and fuel compositions or lubricant compositions contain these additives. Carboxylic acids or carboxylic esters are prepared by reacting polymers having at least 30 carbon atoms and at least one carbon--carbon double bond with carbon monoxide and water or an alcohol.

Multiple amide polyether alcohol compounds of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl of 2 to 100 carbon atoms and substituted hydrocarbyl of 2 to 100 carbon atoms; R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbyl of 1 to 100 carbon atoms, substituted hydrocarbyl of 1 to 100 carbon atoms and polyoxyalkylene alcohol of 2 to 200 carbon atoms; R.sub.5 is selected from the group consisting of alkylene of 2 to 20 carbon atoms and alkylene of 2 to 20 carbon atoms having at least one methylene group replaced by at least one oxygen atom or at least one acylated nitrogen atom; x and y are each from 1 to 50 and the weight average molecular weight of the additive compound is greater than about 600 when used as gasoline additives are found to decrease intake valve deposits.

The effectiveness is prolonged for catalytic oxidizers to reduce emissions of both HC and CO from two-stroke gasoline engines. A compound of a platinum group metal is added to the cylinder of the engine, to make it available as an active oxidation catalyst by combustion of the fuel. Preferably, the platinum group metal compound is added with the lubricating oil, but can be added to the fuel or through a separate injection.

Polylactone aminocarbamates having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrocarbyl group having a sufficient number of carbon atoms to render the compound soluble in hydrocarbons boiling in the gasoline or diesel fuel range;R.sub.2 is an alkylene group of about 2 to 5 carbon atoms;A is a polyamine moiety having at least one basic nitrogen atom;and x is an integer from 1 to 25.The polylactone aminocarbamates of formula I are useful as fuel additives for the prevention and control of engine deposits.
