In the on-vehicle radar apparatus of the present invention, the vertical scanning width of the radar beam is narrowed, before the horizontal scanning, thereby avoiding unnecessary data processing and improving the data processing efficiently. Further, the S/N ratio of the target detection signal is increased, thereby stabilizing the distance detection and its accuracy. The vertical scanning antenna is a single travelling wave excitation antenna (TWEA) constructed by a plurality of antenna elements. At the same time, the horizontal scanning antenna is a multi-channel antenna wherein a plurality of TWEAs is assigned to a plurality of horizontal directions. The horizontal scanning angle is arbitrarily widened by increasing the number of TWEAs.

As a result, variations in intervals between the gate and drain electrodes and between the gate and source electrodes can be reduced.

A slide member has a sliding surface made of ceramic and has a surface roughness of not more than 1.0 .mu.m in center line average roughness Ra. ceramic includes a silicon nitride sintered body, which contains crystal grains having a linear density of at least 35 per 30 .mu.m in length with a boundary phase volume ratio of not more than 15 volume %, and which contains pores of not more than 20 .mu.m in maximum diameter in a content of not more than 3%. In a method of manufacturing the slide member, it is possible to ensure smoothness of the sliding surface by grinding the sliding surface and thereafter heating the ceramic in either inert gas or an atmospheric air. A slide member that can be used under severe sliding conditions of high-speed sliding or the like and that has excellent wear resistance is obtained. Even if the slide member is used for a sliding part of a compressor or the like which employs a fluorocarbon containing no chlorine as a cooling medium, it is possible to prevent the occurrence of seizure and abnormal wear on the sliding surface.

The strip conductor comprises a feeding strip line which extends in an extension direction, and at least two radiation antenna elements. At least one of the antenna elements is connected with one side of the strip line, and at least one of the antenna elements is connected with the other side of the strip line. The longitudinal directions of the antenna elements are parallel to each other and are at an angle of other than 90° with respect to the extension direction. The strip line has a bending shape and fully extends in the extension direction so that the antenna elements are connected with the strip line at the same angle.

A waveguide-transmission line converter has a waveguide including side walls which have inner corners at an open end of the waveguide. The inner corners are beveled to provide tapered inner surfaces. Even if a dielectric substrate is assembled out of alignment with the waveguide due to an assembling error, edges of a ground metal layer on the dielectric substrate are exposed from the beveled inner corners at the open end of the waveguide. The beveled inner corners keep the waveguide spaced widely from edges of a matching element on the dielectric substrate, preventing an electric field concentration from occurring between the waveguide and the matching element. The waveguide-transmission line converter has electromagnetic energy passing and reflecting characteristics prevented from varying.
